DescriptionCastleStorm: Free to Siege is real-time fantasy strategy game based on the mechanics of the initial CastleStorm game. Like the main version it blends different genres such as castle sieges through elements of the ballistics games and portions of tower defense games to spawn minions that follow a straight path fighting incoming enemies and defending a castle. These minions are not controlled by the player. There is also the ability to bring a hero in the battle, fully controlled by the player for movement, attack and defense, all combined with the other gameplay elements simultaneously and separate spells to attack the enemy castle and troops.
In the game the player takes on the role of a hero, the Protector of the Realm, who is in a fight between two kingdoms that each have a powerful crystal that was provided to them by the goddess of peace. In the main Campaign mode there are four large chapters with a branching level paths and a different hero for each campaign. There is variety in the missions such as fighting with the hero alone or fending off waves with the ballistic tactics, but most missions combine all elements.
The enemy's castle needs to be broken down with a siege similar to the Angry Birds games. The main weapon is a ballista that fires projectiles like arrows, spiked balls, apples, eagles, boulders and sheep. Some of them can be tapped in flight to cause additional damage and they each have a cooldown time. Meanwhile enemies approach from the other castle and attempt to steal the flag. They can be targeted with the ballista as well, but pork chops are generated as a food source used to send out troops that fight the enemies by themselves. It is also possible to unleash powerful spells like shooting frenzy, an armageddon (kills all troops on the field) or a meteor shower. If the flag is about to be carried to the other castle or any other moment it is possible to send in the main hero and control him during the fight by jumping, using a shield or slashing with a sword.
Some missions have a time limit and up to three stars can be earned based on different objectives. Stars are needed to keep progressing through the campaign. The game is free-to-play with the basic gold currency and the premium diamonds and pearls currencies. Pearls can be earned in-game, but they are rare and by grinding long enough they can be converted into diamonds. Diamonds are for instance needed to unlock the other three campaigns. Some purchases are grouped into packs, also offered to disable the in-game advertisements. There are also packs for a single purchase at a low price that remove the ads and provide a steady income of coins and diamonds forever. The character has a global level and rewards are provided for each new one. The castles can be customized by adding on different types of rooms to provide more troops or food, also unlocked gradually. It is possible to purchase boosters that enhance equipment, weapons, defense and spells. There are also boosters that rebuild the entire castle, return the flag right away or revive the hero.
Before starting a game the player selects or unlocks the hero to take into battle, the different troops, the rooms in the castle and the projectiles for the ballista. Each of these can be upgraded in various ways. Only a few can be used initially until they are unlocked and additional slots become available. Next to the main campaign there are temporary raids, a survival mode and online multiplayer.
