Powerboat Challenge 3D is a game that conceivably could get better over time with updates. A series of new characters and race courses would make it even more challenging and the type of game that players would come back to.
Lets get the bad out of the way: crappy-but-forgivable AI, difficult tilt control, and no sound effects. That’s it. Everything else about Powerboat Challenge is soaking in off-the-shelf quality; from the graphics, to the touch controls, to the sheer massive amount of race types and other content. Powerboat is one of the few games on store that is completely worth it’s price tag, and then some! Go get it.
The only criticism is over some of the menu controls and it's clear that this is a java port. The race selection screen is displayed as a map of the island and you press left or right to scroll through the available races. Personally, I thought touching the location would have seemed more obvious.
There's also great potential for repeated play here, with the option of using race winnings to upgrade your boat. Plus, there are four different characters and four different islands to take your boat. This is no easy ride, mind you. Powerboat Challenge is a title you'll work around the clock to get better at, and that's something we should all have time for.
For $5.99 you do get a lot of racing for your money, but the game just isn't fun to play. There's no excitement in any of the races. No jumps. No indoor tracks. While the game looks great, it runs aground when it comes to actual gameplay.
