Besides quality gameplay, humor and creativity score big points with us. The weird and silly Wolfenstein RPG is a welcome counterpart to the angry and serious Wolfenstein 3D. Both games deserve a place on your iPhone, and we're expecting the same "dichotomy of man" split down the middle when they eventually bring Doom Classic and Doom 2 RPG to the iPhone. We tend to expect nothing but the best from id, and this time, they delivered.

On the downside, Wolfenstein RPG was originally designed for legacy mobile phones, and it shows. The graphics have been scaled up so that the sprites are presented in a higher resolution and the 3D animation runs more smoothly, but the quality is still a step below other games that have been designed from the ground up for the iPhone. Otherwise, the weird and silly Wolfenstein RPG is a welcome counterpart to the angry and serious Wolfenstein 3D.

Wolfenstein RPG is full of such balancing acts: hardcore RPG elements rounded off by chicken-kicking mini-games. An intense tale of storming a Nazi castle set against a jokey script. And chief among them: a distinctly retro-tinged experience that feels perfectly at home on Apple's state-of-the art iPhone. Unmissable.

If you have the right expectations -- mainly, you are ready for a classic turn-based adventure straight outta 1987 -- Wolfenstein RPG will entertain the hell out of you. I enjoyed the game on traditional mobile, but this iPhone update improves on every aspect of the original. The controls are better. There are more secrets. The art style is superior. You will get six or seven hours of play out of this game, and that's if you just press through it without looking for all of the goodies or experiment with the syringe boosters. I had a great time with Wolfenstein RPG and heartily recommend it.
