Retro Game Reviews (Aug 02, 2020)
Breakout 2000 is a welcome upgrade to the 1976 original and it successfully manages to update the established gameplay to include power-ups and ever-changing stage layouts. It's unfortunate then that it doesn't do much to advance the genre, as most of its new ideas are heavily inspired by similar games from a decade earlier.
GamePro (US) (Dec, 1998)
The original Breakout (included on this cart) was great in its day, and Breakout 2000 is good now for two players, offering low-key broad-appeal fun.

For players who want seat-of-the-pants excitement and nonstop action, Breakout 2000 is not for them. Rather, this title is best suited for those who are looking for a game to relax with, an oasis of calm amid the seas of fighting, racing, and shooting titles. While graphics and sound are nothing to get excited over, they are not bad, and the two-player mode will prove entertaining for a while, at least.
