While the backgrounds are fully 3D, they retain the same level of detail as the classic 2D backgrounds. I looked forward to seeing each one, which is rare for a jaded gamer like myself. The audio is a nice combination of rock and jazz music. Modes include single and team fighting, as well an "endless survival" mode that challenges you to beat up as many guys as possible (good idea!). King of Fighters Evolution is awesome.

King of Fighters '99 Evolution isn't a stellar title. For that matter, most people are probably tired of 2D fighting games, saying that they all play the same. And if you want to get technical, it's true that they all 2D fighting games are similar, just like how Tekken and Virtua Fighter are essentially the same 3D fighting game, and exactly how Madden 2001 and NFL2K1. are identical football games. So the argument isn't if you're going to get another 2D fighting game that you've played over and over again. Will get King of Fighters '99 Evolution that, even with all its flaws, features lots of personality and character from its 30 plus fighter roster, new play mechanics, lots of gameplay depth, and last, but not least, a mix of 3D backgrounds with cool 2D visuals? That's an easy question for me, and I hope that Agetec will bring out a few more extinct 2D fighting games from SNK (Last Blade, anyone?)

The King of Fighters series has come along way and I'm glad to see that King of Fighters '99: Evolution has truly evolved. Even though the new Striker system is mostly useless, it is a step in the right direction that SNK can hopefully adjust accordingly for the next installment. Meanwhile, most of the characters were adjusted for the good of balanced gameplay, minus Terry and his new pet monkey (Hey, nobody's perfect). Balanced gameplay is important in my book and is a sign of a truly good game. Add in some rocking tunes, cool new characters, and a progressing tree of history that picks up where the last game left off and you've got a winner. SNK fanatics and fighter fans alike can now rejoice as we have a game that we already loved that is only getting better. In conjunction with this title and Garou: Mark of the Wolves, SNK has calmed my fears of their classic 2-D franchise fading into obscurity.

The final King of Fighters game for the Dreamcast gives the series a brand new start. The graphics are more in the tradition of the Street Fighter-style, with smoother 3D backgrounds and a more anime style to the characters and artwork. If you weren't wowed by the visuals of King of Fighter: Dream Match 1999, then Evolution might be the King of Fighter for you!
The classic series still lacks innovation-but it's still as fun as ever!

En definitiva, un juego de lucha "marca SNK" más, en la línea de los anteriores KoF, con escenarios poligonales para la ocasión, pero con pocas variaciones en cuanto al sistema de juego. Si ya habéis probado algunas otros KoF y no os han entusiasmado, éste tampoco lo hará; si por contra os maravillaron, aquí tenéis una buena oportunidad de ver como lucen Terry, Kyo y compañía en las consolas de nueva generación.

Wenn man jedoch zuvor Marvel vs. Capcom 2 gezockt hat, vermisst man allerdings einige Features wie Team Combos oder die jederzeitige Wechselmöglichkeit der Kämpfer schmerzlich. Die Striker werden unserer Meinung nach noch viel zu wenig in den Spielverlauf mit einbezogen - das muss im nächsten Teil noch besser werden! Erneut stark kommt dagegen der fetzige Soundtrack - hier hat SNK Capcom wie auch beim Charakter-Design noch einiges voraus. Müsst ihr euch diesen Monat für einen Import-Prügler entscheiden, würde ich mit knappem Vorsprung jedoch Marvel vs. Capcom empfehlen - es ist einfach spielerisch gehaltvoller.

The King of Fighters '99 Evolution for the Dreamcast successfully reproduces just about every aspect of SNK's original NeoGeo fighting game, The King of Fighters '99, and actually improves on several of them. It features all-new, fully 3D backgrounds, hidden striker characters, and new play modes. In fact, it's an excellent port - but it's a port of a disappointing game, especially if you've played Dream Match, the previous King of Fighters game.

Overall, King of Fighters '99 Evolution is a much better port than last year's edition. The background are far better, the music doesn't stop between rounds when fighting in the one-player Team Mode, and the new strikers are a nice touch. However, while SNK tried to advance the series in a new direction with some new gameplay elements, I don't think they were implemented as well as they could have been. The new characters help a good deal, but in the end, I think the main thing King of Fighters '99 Evolution accomplishes is further advancing the best story ever in a fighting game (while I agree that stories don't matter in most fighting games, in the KOF series, I think it adds greatly to the series as a whole). For now, I think the KOF series improved enough since last year to not make the player feel like he is playing last year's version in new clothing, and hopefully those new gameplay modes will be implemented better next time around.
