In Land der Hoffnung (Land of Hope), you are the leader of the small country Breehn, which is in a bad trap - the number of inhabitants is increasing rapidly, but there's no more room for them to live. So you need another place to live. A wealthy place, a place with room to settle down, with large forests and much green land for your cattle. And you eventually find this land! So you gather your trusted council members around you and begin to lead your people to this fabulous land. But you didn't know that others wanted that too...

Land der Hoffnung has 40 missions, each with increasing difficulty. It features 40 different buildings, each of them training different units (25 in total). The game is not about war (in some missions, you even fail if you attack an opponent). In short, Land der Hoffnung is a typical Settlers clone.

The whole game was programmed in Borland Delphi.

Land der Hoffnung was German newcomer Innonics’ first game.

The crew around managing director Marc Möhring, as enthusiastic as it was green, came up with a special idea to promote their debut program: they recorded a professional pop single. The song, written by Land der Hoffnung’s musician Matthias Preis and performed by musical singer Katharina Debus, was produced by Heiner Lürig – a renowned guitarist and songwriter for German “intellectual rocker” Heinz-Rudolf Kunze (”Dein ist mein ganzes Herz”). The result was the pop ballad Land of Hope, a cheesy yet likeable little tune.

Innonics produced a couple hundred single CDs featuring Land of Hope (4’12) and an almost identical Percussion Edit (4’12) and spread them among business partners and the press, with little to no impact. If the company had secretly hoped for a commercial success, it must have been utterly disappointed. With the PR effect of the song close to nil, Innonics had effectively wasted a lot of money – and all for what may safely be considered one of the worst German games.

You may never hear the music, but enjoy the Land of Hope lyrics:

Every night we lay together
I did listen to your dreams
Every day our love was growing
But that’s not enough it seems

And your arms would cover me
Now your heart is breaking free
And as I feel its longing
For untouched rivers
Unknown treasures in the Land of Hope

Wherever it may take you
My heart is flying to you
Upon wings of love

The waves
Will guide you with their starshine
Reflection of the shoreline
Of your land of dreams
Your Land of Hope

Future days my heart won’t suffer
No longer it’s with me
All my love in silent passion
Will flow into the sea

When the foam might kiss your eyes
You will feel my heartbeat rise
For then my heart will water the ocean
And embrace your new-found
Land of Hope

Wherever it may take you
My heart is flying to you
Upon wings of love

The waves
Will guide you with their starshine
Reflection of the shoreline
Of your land of dreams
