Landfall is a tactical shooter with birds-eye view. The game takes place in a post apocalyptic setting where the poles have melted and most of the world is covered in water. Humanity has recovered and progress returns when one of the many colonies starts a rebellion. It's up to the player to lead the army that is to squash the rebellion.
In Landfall the player controls a single character using a gamepad. Controls are typical for twin-stick shooters, with one stick for movement and one for firing in 360 degrees. Aside from movement and firing the player character can use special abilities and interact with the environment (crouch behind cover, capture tactical positions, interact with objectives, etc.). Similar to Titan Fall the player can also drop in giant Striders (mechs) to wreak havoc.
The game features a dozen different loadouts, each with unique weapons (lasers, machine guns, shotguns, snipers, rocket launchers, etc.), special abilities (teleportation, invisibility, shield dome, mines, guided missiles, etc.) and Striders. The player can switch between different loadouts during gameplay. In the campaign (which can be played both in single player and 2 player coop) the levels dictate which loadouts can be used. In versus (1 vs 1 and 2 vs 2) players slowly earn XP with which they can unlock loadouts.
Missions are usually divided in three separate zones between which the camera switches position. There are various objectives such as ticket depletion, explosive planting, vehicle escorting, and intelligence stealing.
The game also features a spectator mode which can be used to spectate coop and versus matches.
