Late Shift is a crime thriller that takes place in the London, most at night time. The player controls Matt, an ordinary guy who works at the car parking place. One night, as he was starting his late shift, things take turn for the worse. Being held at gunpoint by an injured burglar, Matt can choose to run or be taken into custody. Inevitably, he gets caught and tossed in with the band of four thieves that have found themselves one man short. Unwillingly, Matt agrees to help them steal a priceless Ming Dynasty Chinese cup from the action.
The game plays as a non-stop interactive movie which occasionally presents the player with an option to make Matt do something or react in a specific way which alters the story and eventually lead to one of several good and bad endings. Failing to select a choice in an allotted time till yield a default answer for the player. Upon completing the game which is overall a length of a full feature movie, the player can see how many choices were made, how many endings were reached and how many chapters were unlocked. Playing or re-playing the game does not support jumping to choices or fast forwarding of the seen videos and each playthrough starts as a new movie from beginning to end.
