WindowsGameGenie (2001)
Complexity, beauty, simplicity, sweetness, and artistic are all words that can be used to describe Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Few games have such an atmosphere that completely wraps you up in a game and does not let go. The beauty of the graphics alone are stunning enough, but when you combine it with gameplay that offers great combat and levels that require a good amount of thought to get through, you get a sweet game. Anyone who even plays a few minutes of this game will be drawn in and end up playing for hours on end because of how much fun this game is. Overall, this is a game for everyone because of its diversity and incredible fun factor.

There’s probably a lot more I could say and yes it’s wide open for a number 3, that’s not a bad thing. It’s nice to see a sense of continuity between the games and to say one last word, complete SR2 and you get a code to unlock the locked bonus content on the DVD. You’ll love it or you’ll hate it, the same as SR1. Personally I loved it and still do, so I recommend the game to you as a good break from the current set of releases. Until next time and Soul Reaver 3, laters.
PlayStation 2PSX Extreme (Feb 05, 2002)
Basically, Soul Reaver 2 is a game larger than the sum of its parts, with all aspects melding together to create an incredibly appealing and original work. Almost everything in the game has been improved on from the first game, which is not an easy task. With a great battle system, amazing visuals, and a compelling story, Soul Reaver 2 is a definite must have for any PS2 library. This is one epic journey, peopled with characters not likely to be forgotten any time soon, and very likely to be revisited again and again.
PlayStation 2Gaming Target (Mar 29, 2002)
As I've said earlier, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 isn't the best-looking PlayStation 2 title. Hell, it's not even the best of show in gameplay. But, the game does have a whole bunch of bonus materials, and even an original storyline that continues the popular PlayStation title Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, with a more improved gameplay system that's altered a little, and works even better than the first's. Those who endure in satisfaction with battles and blood, but can't stand puzzle solving that will happen often at times within the game...Soul Reaver 2 is most likely not for you. If you were a huge fan of the first title, though, or are just interested in becoming a part of the Soul Reaver series, then the direction definitely lies within this well put together game of many good but not all great qualities. Buy the sequel today if the soul lust is what you crave.
PlayStation (UK) (Jan 22, 2002)
For fans of the original, Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver 2 is a dream come true. It's amuch better game than its predecessor, built from the ground up with a strong story element, and although extremely linear in places, it's an adventure well worth partaking of, whether you're a grizzled veteran or a newcomer to the series. Although occasionally a bit too balanced, allowing the action to let up more than one might expect, and despite a sum total of no replay value, Crystal Dynamics have created one of the finest examples of a third person action adventure game on any system. If I had to choose between this and something like Abe's Oddysee, I know where I would be.
PlayStation 2Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Jan 02, 2001)
Raziel’s quest contains an extensive storyline with smart plot twists, compelling dialogue and characters that (if you’ll pardon the pun) really sink their teeth into you. With the block puzzles of yesteryear largely giving way to new challenges, this chapter provides a lot more variety on that front, while the Soul Reaver’s parasitic nature forces you to use more of the various normal weapons. As such this title is loaded with more variety than its predecessor and will keep you focused on your combat skills far longer. With its amazing sound work, stunning musical score and easy to use control scheme, about the only thing you can complain about in this release is the length. While it’s short, Soul Reaver 2‘s brevity seems to be the price we have to pay for a much more streamlined game, with little backtracking and a roller coaster story that sets a frantic pace.
PlayStation 2GameZone (Nov 08, 2001)
Eidos and Crystal Dynamics have brought to us a most wondrous tale to devour. Soul Reaver 2 is the result of a painstaking devotion to creating a complex and intriguing world that consumes the gamer as it's hero Raziel devours souls. It is will, without a doubt, entertain fans of Nosgoth and dark fantasy, and leave those of a literary inclination with an impression they shall not soon forget.
PlayStation (Feb 08, 2002)
WindowsIGN (Dec 07, 2001)
Perversely defiled and still lusting for the blood of his creator/destroyer, Raziel returns.
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Oct 30, 2001)
Soul Reaver 2, as the saying goes, burns bright, but not as long as you'd like.
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Dec, 2001)
The story is really what Soul Reaver 2 is all about, and is the thing that really got me hooked. I was pretty confused for the first couple of hours, but once the plot starts to unravel, I couldn’t put the controller down. Sure, some of the puzzle logic is insane, and the time travel story gets a little convoluted, but overall Soul Reaver fans will get everything they could ask for from this sequel.
PlayStation (Jan 14, 2002)
WindowsActionTrip (Dec 07, 2001)
The fights, though entertaining could've been made a bit more challenging, as I didn't get enough of that sense of accomplishment after beating some of the "tougher" spooks. The same could be said for the logical puzzles, which unfortunately don't require a whole lot of mental exercise, and those are about the only significant drawbacks that caught my attention in this sequel. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to any action adventure fan out there, especially those who are looking to drift away to a captivating fantasy world, away from their daily choirs and work/school related routines.
PlayStation (Jan 30, 2002)
WindowsPC Zone (Dec 25, 2001)
Refreshingly, the frequent combat in Soul Reaver 2 is rewarding in its own right, with a satisfying dodge-and-counter dynamic that makes battles consistently enjoyable. There are countless other praiseworthy features that I could mention given the space, but instead I'll simply assure you that, generic in nature though it may be, this is still one of the most consistently entertaining and elegantly constructed games I have played in a long time. Indeed, it's among one of the finest action/adventures available on the PC.
PlayStation (Nov 28, 2001)
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Dec, 2001)
Since this project has been in development for so long, its age shows in the combat and sparsely decorated environments. The texturing is decent, as are the effects, but it still feels like a high-resolution PlayStation game. I slammed the first game for its unsatisfactory finale, but I walked away from the sequel completely satisfied.
WindowsGameplay (Benelux) (Dec 28, 2001)
WindowsPC Zone Benelux (Feb, 2002)
WindowsGameSpy (Feb 15, 2002)
Despite a few shortcomings, Soul Reaver 2 is more vampire fun, more third-person action and exploration, and displays the best graphics yet for the series.
PlayStation 2PSM (Dec, 2001)
When compared with the first Soul Reaver, which was released on the PSone, this sequel is definitely a major step forward for the series. However, that doesn't mean it doesn't suffer from its fair share of problems. Fortunately, these problems are pretty minor and don't detract from the overall experience that much.
PlayStation 2Super Play (Sweden) (Dec, 2001)
WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Dec, 2001)
WindowsGameSpot (Dec 03, 2001)
Those players familiar with the original Soul Reaver should have a good idea of what to expect from the sequel and its innovative blend of action and puzzle-solving.
WindowsPC Gamer (Mar, 2002)
Who says you need to be Japanese to come up with bizarre worlds wrapped up in insanely Byzantine plotlines? Crystal Dynamics has proved perfectly capable with this complex, colorful, and incredibly absorbing sequel to one of the best action games of 1999.
WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Dec 04, 2001)
PlayStation (Feb 16, 2002)
But…how often can you see a certain set of scenery, no matter how slightly changed by time, before you start getting bored? Different and more difficult creatures may present more of a challenge but in the end you are looking at the same old swamp, etc. You may have to explore a different location, solving a puzzle that allows you to reach other areas…but you emerge and travel through the same old scenes. There seems to be little progression other than going back and forth. The story progresses beautifully, which was why I kept playing, and kept me interested…not knowing if it was Kain or Morbius that I should impale on my Soul Reaver and see my chinless blue grin as they lie dying in order that I can suck their soul …(sorry I got carried away). All in all I found this game very playable and enjoyable.
PlayStation 2Game Revolution (Dec, 2001)
Raziel continues to offer us a solid gaming experience, even if it's not truly inspired. What keeps me coming back is the story. Like a soap opera, if you know all the characters and have made your way through all the games, you'll find yourself addicted. You just have to know what happens next, even though the plot gets sillier the longer they extend it out. And also like a soap, it's a little hard to start right in the middle and know what's going on. The Legacy of Kain series is one of those rare games where it's actually worth paying attention to the story. Too bad you have to go back to the PS1 to get caught up.
PlayStation 2GamePro (US) (Nov 02, 2001)
Soul Reaver 2 takes as many steps back as it does forward, and ends up teetering precariously over the brink of being a disappointment. Perhaps next time we meet our vampire anti-hero, he'll be ready to fully assume his grand role in destiny's dark design for now, however, the Wheel of Raziel?s Fate rests sadly out of alignment.
WindowsJust Adventure (Jan, 2002)
All in all Soul Reaver 2 is a keeper. I cannot wait for the third edition in this saga to come out. I just saw the trailer for Blood Omen 2. Might be interesting to play Kain, although I will be sorry to see Azriel go. He was a dark hero who knew how to kill time….
PlayStation 2Game Critics (Feb 23, 2002)
Sometimes great games have bad stories, and sometimes great stories accompany bad games. However, I have never seen this distinction become more acute than with Soul Reaver 2 for PlayStation 2, Crystal Dynamics long awaited sequel (actually third in the Legacy Of Kain series) to their 1999 vampire epic.
WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Mar, 2002)
Soul Reaver 2 might stop you from using monosyllabic words, but I wouldn’t recommend picking it up for an action-packed gaming session.
