Very atmospheric, but unfortunately short-lived Amiga EboMike (3120)

AmigaZero (Mar, 1990)
An atmospheric blend of tactics, arcade action and cunning rolled into one.

Atari STZero (Mar, 1990)
A tense, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable game. Actually, let's replace 'thoroughly enjoyable' with 'utterly engrossing'.

If your drive to survive is greater than your will to kill, this game is for you. If you kill for thrill, you'll still love Lost Patrol, but you'll be dead or doo-lally before Day Three!

AmigaThe Games Machine (UK) (Mar, 1990)
If you're expecting a violent action game, like so many of Ocean's war releases, then forget it. This is one of the new breed of Ocean products. Following on from F-29 Retaliator, The Lost Patrol falls very firmly into the strategy mould. Still, action freaks will have their hands full.

AmigaCU Amiga (Mar, 1990)
All the individual sections are good fun to play. The graphics are tidy but unfortunately are not as impressive as the early demos led us to believe. A weak sounding, but catchy, semi-techno tune plays throughout, only interrupted by bursts of gunfire and the occasional scream. Lost Patrol is not what I had originally expected. Instead of a really absorbing, well plotted strategy it’s turned just a string of arcade sequences. Despite this disappointment Lost Patrol is a pretty good excuse for a romp through the Vietnamese countryside, and it does provide some genuine entertainment.

Great to look at, but lacks the excitement and atmosphere to make it a completely gripping game.

AmigaThe One (Feb, 1990)
Fortunately the strategic element holds it together - there's definitely a challenge here - but the whole thing is really a bit of a missed opportunity. The Lost Patrol should have been on a much larger scale with a lot more to do - just like the Cinemaware games it's tried to emulate.

AmigaZzap! (Sep, 1990)
Disappointing foldout instruction sheet and no disk save option, but animation sequences and static screens are good. Disk accessing reasonable. A very high standard of artwork. The colours are not always convincing and hand-to-hand combat is jerky, but graphics are very good overall. A good, if somewhat dull ’un-Vietnamese’ soundtrack with the odd good spot FX. Not that difficult to get into and the desire to see the arcade sequences is compulsive... ...but it is not that big a quest and the high difficulty means repeated trudging through that first twenty miles. Interesting and unusual but not outstanding.

The let-down is the arcade sequences, where the GIs encounter VC snipers, machine-gun nets and so on. Poorly-drawn and offering little challenge, they detract from the strategy element rather than adding any arcade excitement. Sound is basic, with no add-on sound cards supported.

AmigaAmiga Joker (Oct, 1990)

DOSPC Leisure (Nov, 1990)
Ocean has come quite close with this, which after all was its first attempt at a game of this type. However, the whole never quite equals the sum of its parts - and even the parts don't continue to entertain for very long. Put it down as a missed opportunity.

AmigaAmiga Power (May, 1991)
Graphics are nothing short of stunning. Unfortunately the game itself is incredibly tedious (if you can actually find any in there). Atmospheric, but lacking any playability. One for Vietnam obsessives only.

This is an arcade game in which the player attempts to bring his/her patrol home from a grueling mission in Vietnam. The underlying thesis is interesting, but keyboard input is awkward and too slow, while joystick input is so poorly done that the entire game is totally unplayable.
