Bill the Demon is a side-scrolling platformer. The player is a Demon called 'Bill', who wants to impress the other Demons by getting an autograph from the Devil. In order to do so he has to pass all nine circles of hell.

Other than you would expect from a Demon, Bill has no special skills or attacks, he can't even attack. He has a paralyzing shout which buys some time to flee from enemies or destroys some unstable walls. Over time or when shouting Bill becomes hungry and needs to eat human souls. Human souls are placed in the levels and can be consumed to refill he hunger bar. In addition, the player gets one extra life for every 25 souls consumed. This hunger feature forces the player to keep Bill moving, because otherwise he will die of starvation.

There are several kinds of monsters on the way through the nine circles of hell, e.g. monsters coming out of the ground or large, flying eyes. After finishing one circle of the hell, the player gets a code which can be used to reload at the beginning of the cycle with exactly the same stats he had when reaching it.There are several checkpoints in the levels where Bill respawns after dying. The game is lost when Bill has no more lives left.
