Description

Capsized is a 2D platformer about an astronaut whose space craft explodes. The crew members get away but crash their escape pods on an unknown planet. The goal is to reunite the astronaut with his crew and find a way to leave. The planet has a lush environment of alien life forms and dense jungle. In the main campaign mode the player has to guide the space traveler through twelve missions. Even though the level objectives are linear, such as rescuing crew members, destroying idols that jam radio signals, or taking out alien spiritual leaders, there is a certain amount of freedom to choose a route because of a large amount of vertical design.

A major part of the game is based on exploring the environment. There are optional secret areas to discover and minor physics puzzles. The astronaut can interact with many elements in the background and not all of them are dangerous. The player can move the space traveler around, jump (as well as using walls) and move up ledges. He can also shoot a beam that acts as a grappling hook, to reach higher platforms, cross gaps or propel himself upwards. Through a power-up a limited amount of jet pack boost is provided as well. Many areas are blocked with debris, stones, wood and plants. Using a beam these can be lifted up and thrown away. There is also a flash light to explore dark areas.

Movement is equally important when encountering alien life forms. Because of their numbers and strength, movement is important to quickly move around and attack from different angles. The beam can for instance be used to lift items such as stones and use them as shields, or fling them towards the aliens (gravity ram). The basic weapon is the blast-carbine with unlimited ammo, a feeble laser. Various other weapons can be found in the environment, such as the machine gun-like pulsar, the immolator (similar to a flame thrower), plas-mortar (grenade launcher) or nano caster (rocket launcher). These all have a limited amount of ammo. There are also temporary power-ups that provide a shield or nano robots that attack opponents.

There is a limited amount of lives, but new ones can be picked up. When dying, the space man respawns nearby, but when all lives are used up the level needs to be restarted.

Next to the campaign mode with multiple difficulty levels there is the arcade mode, with the following game types:* Bot match

  • Time trial
  • Survival
  • Armless
  • Duel

Multiplayer is supported for two players locally on a single screen. There is a cooperative mode, as well as deathmatch. The iPad version does not feature multiplayer and it has redesigned controls. The Xbox 360 version has enhanced graphics and new levels.
