DescriptionIn The Hat Man: Shadow Ward, players go to the Canton State Insane Asylum to investigate the disappearance of their daughter who has gone missing from the facility. Upon arrival, they'll find her journal, which will tell her story and how the place is haunted by supernatural beings known only as the Shadow People and the Hat Man, a shadowy figure with empty eye sockets who steals people's souls.
The game is played in a first-person perspective. Players can choose to play the role of the father or mother of the missing patient. Once the patient's diary is found, a gust of wind blows and spreads its pages, and the player must find them to understand what has happened in the asylum. The pages give more information about the Hat Man and the hurdles the player faces along the way. The asylum layout is procedurally generated, but some key rooms will always be present. For instance, right in the beginning there's a blocked door which can only be transversed by breaking in with an axe, which must be first found. The gameplay revolves around finding such items and the pages to finally find the daughter.
While looking for such items the player will be haunted by the Hat Man, who can only be avoided. Auditory cues will help the player both find the items (whispers can be heard while near the items) and avoid the Hat Man (his groaning can be heard when he's near and the heartbeat of the player will also be audible). The game can be saved limited times in televisions placed in specific points of the game.
