Jolly Rover may not do much to shake up the traditional adventure game formula, but with its solid gameplay, hilarious writing, and gorgeous visuals, it’s really hard to complain. It’s a fun and charming adventure and thanks to its helpful hint features, it’s also a game that will appeal to just about anyone, landlubber or not.

With its cute story, simple mechanics, and relative family-friendliness (it’s rated 12+ in the Mac App Store for mild cartoon violence, mild alcohol/tobacco references, and mild crude humor), it’s a funny high-seas romp.

I can't figure out who the target market for this game is. The dialog and puzzles are clearly for teens and older, but the illustration is very much for younger children. It's like the project was written, but then became a children's game halfway through production. On the whole, Jolly Rover is a poor man's Secret of Monkey Island. It has some minutes of comedy, some frustrating puzzles, and a story filled with pirates and voodoo. It isn't bad, but it isn't that good, either. If you want to play an adventure game, this is one of them.
