The Maze Runner is an auto-run platformer based on the 2014 movie of the same name. It has a dystopian science fiction setting where several young people wake up in a location called The Glade, with no recollection of the past. The Glade is surrounded by the Maze, a large maze complex. Every now and then a gate opens and then some of the fast Gladers run inside, with a limited amount of time, to map the Maze and search for clues to find a way out. As an endless runner the gameplay is very similar to scenes from the film.
Players can choose between different Gladers to go running. The Maze is split up in several sections, unlocked gradually, with multiple levels for each one. Contrary to similar games levels are not randomized, but have a fixed lay-out. To keep progressing clues need to be gathered from each level. This can be done in successive runs as sometimes some can be missed or they are found through the second option of a branching path. A Glader moves forward automatically and is moved between lanes by swiping left or right. It is also possible to jump and slide by swiping up and down respectively. Gaps and major obstacles end runs right away, but the runners can also be slowed down by crashing into breakable crates or following the long routes. There is a time limit and Gladers can sprint by tapping the screen repeatedly. Stamina is limited and takes some time to recharge.
Next to clues, coins can be gathered as the basic currency. The game is free-to-play and contains advertisements. In-app purchases are used to buy supply crates to remove the ads and receive coins and the premium gems currency. They are also needed to acquire the game's six premium characters, to buy additional coins and gems, or a permanent coin doubler. There are daily gifts and offers and ads to receive additional gems. Each character from the movie such as Alby, Ben, Minho, Newt, Teresa, Thomas, and Winston has different statistics based on speed and stamina, along with some perks. Only a few of them can be unlocked with currencies, most of them are in-app purchases. Coins can be used to upgrade a runner's abilities several times, affecting body armor, sprint, stamina, or extending the coin magnet power-up duration or providing additional time.
