Description official description

The title Medal of Honor is reused in this modern installment of the long running series of the same name. For the first time, the series leaves the Second World War. This time, the portrayed conflict is the war in Afghanistan conducted by the NATO forces against the Taliban army of that country, a war that was still on at the time the game was released.

The game plays like many other realistic war FPS in the Call of Duty or Medal of Honor series, with the player taking the role of various different soldiers within small squads who have to obey the precise instructions given by the squad leader. In the current game, we follow the attempts of Colonel Drucker to capture a valley full of talibans with his commanding officer, General Flagg, pushing him to do it in less than two days. The player takes the role of soldiers "Rabbit" and "Deuce" within AFO (Advanced Force Operations) Neptune and Wolfpack respectively for the subtle missions and ranger Adams in the direct confrontation missions.

All of the basics of any modern warfare shooter are here. There are driven missions (on quad bikes), missions in which the player has to mark targets to aircraft artillery, zones requiring night-vision, stealth mission, etc. The same way, the game features a class-based multiplayer experience where the player's avatar levels up and gains new skills by earning experience points during gameplay. The classes are Rifleman, Special Ops and Sniper and the two available teams are the Coallition, representing NATO forces and the Opposing Forces, representing the Taliban.

The single player campaign and multiplayer parts of the game have been developed by different studios, Danger Close the first one and DICE the second one.

A Soldier's Touch

The Good
Screenshots and trailers cannot even begin to describe the game, you really to need to play it to see the immense quality of the graphics, which often not just colour and texture, but cool weather effects and depth in the high altitude and far distance. Not too many music tracks, but just enough to maintain the mood and not too many to distract.

The guns you start with are very well balanced, whether you prefer a dynamic charge with an automatic or a static shooting with a sniping gun. Thankfully you can get extra ammo for the US weapons from your buddies, who provide a fair amount of support on any difficulty. There's plenty of stealth, which you don't have to do if you don't want to. Finally there's the Close Air Support sequences which breaks up the FPS for a little strategy, a few instances of driving, plus a Long Bow helicopter mission for a taste of modernised Desert Strike vibes. This is all like COD Modern Warfare, yet at the same time greatly differentiates itself from it.

The Bad
While there's a lot put into the game's graphics and design, the characters are not so very well polished since you know nothing about them, just their code names and their appearances. Even Sergeant Patterson, isn't very 3-Dimensional. And the game is quite short for the number of missions it has. There is no relation to factual history in modern times, which would have given educational value to the game just like its predecessors and curbed xenophobia. Also the Extras content isn't very rewarding, just credits and cutscenes.

While most of the weapons are brilliant to use, the grenades come in only one flavour, no flashbangs, smoke bombs or other sorts. There's not a lot of places you can replenish your grenades, so really have to ration the ones you've got. Other explosive weapons are rarer still, you're expected to have a very good aim with guns if you want to get far. It really was not necessary to make it so that the player has to press H every time they want to see the HUD. There should have been options to hide it or show it all times to cater to players' comfort.

The Bottom Line
The game doesn't exactly live up to its title seeing that are no medals to be found. Even Rabbit doesn't get a Purple Heart for his bravery. I suppose "Afghanistan Wars" wouldn't have made such a great title. Many would conclude this as a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare clone, expect that it orients itself to existing terrorist groups. It begs the question, do you really want to play the role of a Taliban in multiplayer? Much effort was put into the game, although it does not offer as much as it could have for better replay value and enjoyment. The WW2 Medal of Honor series are better in their own right, but regardless this title has its place and its merit. Purchase this one at your leisure, play it for your pleasure.
