MLB.com Home Run Derby is an officially licensed mobile game of MLB's annual batting competition. The player can choose from 32 different sluggers from the 2010 to 2013 home run derbies. The slugger is controlled from a third-person perspective and the player has to aim and tap the screen at the right moment to get a good hit. There are two game modes: derby and arcade. The derby is a recreation of the real competition where the player has to hit more home runs than the opponents to advance in the tournament. The arcade mode is on time and the player has to hit as many home runs as possible before the time runs out. For each home run more time is added to the clock. By hitting multiplier targets the player can boost his score. There's also a multiplayer mode where the player can compete against friends through Facebook connect.
The game is free-to-play and the player can acquire various items that gives a boost in the competitions. This includes bats, gloves, shoes and power-ups that increase the player's power and contact. There are two different kinds of currencies: MLBucks and coins. MLBucks are earned by placing near the top in the derby and by reaching achievements while coins are earned in the arcade mode. There are also tickets which are required to play the derby mode. When out of tickets the player has to wait until a new one arrives or buy a new one with coins. Coins can be bought with MLBucks which in turn can be bought with real money.
