Mountain is described by the author as a mountain simulator, or an "ambient procedural mountain game". The player gets to experience the life of a mountain by becoming one. The game starts by showing a number of white squares with a keyword and asks the player to draw doodles. This is used to randomize the game for various components. Once finished, a mountain is generated, shown from a third-person perspective and floating in space, not connected to the ground, as two cones stacked bottom to bottom.

Interaction is limited. The mountain rotates by itself and the player can zoom in and out or rotate manually. There are random weather and season effects that determine how the mountain looks and there is a day and night cycle. Once generated it is not possible to start over. The game then becomes an exercise in endurance or meditation. Trees start to grow on the sides of the mountain, fireflies appear at night, various unusual objects drop out of the sky such as an umbrella, an egg, a fire extinguisher, a boat, a plane, a can of soda, etc. Pressing a number of keys on the keyboards (PC version. There is a total of 16 notes) produces synthetic sounds and accelerates the time flow. Sometimes messages, the mountain's thoughts, appear. The game then continues to exist as a type of dynamic screensaver.
