I thoroughly enjoyed Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh. This game captured my attention from the get-go and held it through the long -- and sometimes frustrating -- hours of enjoyable playing. Overall, I would recommend Mummy to those who enjoy a challenge or at least want to explore an ancient Egyptian tomb (vicariously, of course).

With its modest hardware requirements, familiar 'meat-and-potatoes' gameplay, and puzzles of moderate difficulty, "Mummy" may well appeal to novice gamers. But if you are in the market for something spicier, more exotic, and, most importantly, innovative, leave the ancient tombs undisturbed; you'll find there little more than old wine in old bottles and an old adventure game formula mummified.

Just when you think you've seen everything in graphic adventures, Mummy shows it to you once again.

Windows 3.xComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Dec, 1996)
MUMMY: TOMB OF THE PHARAOH is an entertaining story with well-acted movie sequences and good graphics, sound effects and music. The puzzles are sometimes challenging (or obscure, depending on your point of view), but are appropriate to the story and its setting. It's not a groundbreaking title, but MUMMY should provide gamers with a pleasant sojourn into the mysteries of ancient Egypt.

WindowsAdventure Classic Gaming (Aug 01, 2012)
Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh is a fine example of classic gaming from the golden period of the adventure game genre. The game offers Full Motion Video graphics and interactive puzzles that help to fuel the action. There are multiple environments which you can explore, and there are various characters which you can interact with. As the danger mounts and the crisis escalates, it is all too easy to become immersed in the game world as you try and avoid each menace that is thrown your way. In this game, your puzzle solving skills and decision making can mean the difference between life and death!

It would seem that Interplay has followed the current formula for success perfectly: a well-known actor delivering witty and cutting remarks, great photo-realistic graphics which provide the illusion of 3D, and the player cast in the role of ethical investigator. Yet it's this very reliance on formula which keeps Mummy from really standing out in a genre that's currently crowded with mediocre product.

WindowsPower Play (Nov, 1996)

Booting up Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh, I felt like the superstitious laborer in the movies who, wielding the shovel that breaks down the final barrier to a forbidden shrine, tells the archaeologist, "I gotta bad feeling about this, boss." Unfortunately, my intuition was right on the mark. This Mummy comes unwrapped way too quickly. Interplay's follow-up to Frankenstein: Eyes of the Monster, while pretty and entertaining, is simply too small in scope to keep you up very late.

Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh is a fairly average adventure game, not too long and certainly not complicated in any way. Most experienced players will find it very easy and it won't take up too many hours of game playing time. Because of the ease and familiarity of the problems it is best suited to novice players. I say this because you don't have to be too devious to solve the puzzles, inventory items don't have to be manipulated in any way, and mostly everything you find is just as it seems and must be used precisely in the way it is meant to be used.

Windows 3.xGameSpot (Sep 26, 1996)
The overall result is merely an okay-looking, reasonably straightfaced, wonkily-balanced game experience not quite challenging enough for the long-time adventurer and not quite guiding enough for the newbie. It's a shame because the Mummy is, in many ways, a much more engaging character than Frankenstein, with the potential for a deeper backstory and more mythical involvement. If you enjoyed and were not overly daunted by Frankenstein, Mummy will be more like a light snack with occasional pits you need to spit out or swallow with some resignation. Interplay hasn't strolled down the sidewalk with this much of dog in some time, but it's weirdly reassuring to know that nobody's perfect.

The Riddle of Master Lu.

This is not a bad game but far from one of the greats. I would not wholeheartedly either recommend for or against it. However, I found it well worth the $5 I spent on it and would recommend it for that reason alone. The game was put together very professionally, but the gameplay itself stunk. I think this is a classic case of where too much time and money was spent on the graphics and actors, which were first-rate, and not enough time spent on the actual game—the designers copped out on too many puzzles by trotting out the ol' tried-and-trues, and there was not enough, or rather no, originality.
