Mutant League Football isn't the first game to mix monsters and football, but it is the best so far. If only the Pro Bowl would let the NFL players cut loose like these guys do!
Power Unlimited (Nov, 1993)
GamePro (US) (May, 1993)
EA's John Madden Football folks must be pullin' their hair out over this cart, but the Mad' Man has gotta like the humor here. This is a great game for players who want a break from real video football. If you're a warped, twisted, demented football fan, the Mutant League wants you!
GameFan Magazine (May 01, 1993)
Madden meets Beetlejuice. That's exactly what this is. Madden playability with Demons from the dead as your players. Cool huh? Imagine charging down the field and accidentally falling through the field into space! Remember, murder carries a ten yard penalty!
Mean Machines (Apr, 1993)
A solid footy game with some interesting frills, that suffers from some annoying play aberrations. Also, owners of John Madden Football might find the basic gameplay too familiar.
High Score (Jun, 1994)
Game Players (Jul, 1993)
Mutant league Football perfectly balances destruction and sports strategy. Most games in this unusual genre lean too heavily toward smashing and destroying, so any true sports simulation was lost. After all, disemboweling video-game characters can entertain you only for so long. If you've enjoyed the John Madden products and are feeling a little mean-spirited, Mutant League Football could be your cup of blood.
Sega Force (UK) (May, 1993)
Although the basic idea is nothing new, there are enough neat touches to keep you amused. Graphics are fast and colourful, each team kitted out in their own colours as they move like bats out of hell to stomp the opposition. If you like John Madden Football, this should prove to be a blast with a difference you'll enjoy.
Play Time (Sep, 1993)

Genesis fans looking for a fun multi-player experience, and sports fans looking for a fresh take on the genre, would do well to hunt MLFootball down. You will have to temper your expectations, to be sure, since the game doesn't have lasting appeal as a single player experience, but there are few Genesis games as good when playing with a buddy. MLFootball doesn't take itself too seriously, and neither should you hold it to the same standards set by Madden and Montana. The arcade style gameplay allows the game to sit aside the more football simulation games available, and it actually has allowed the game to age more gracefully than its contemporaries. The game can be found for considerably less than its successor, MLHockey, and it is absolutely a title worth having in your collection.
Finally, Mutant League Football is just missing some of the intangibles that great games have. Even though it was popular enough to spawn other games and a cartoon series, there is something that keeps it from being a great game. Although it was fun to play, it is doubtful that you will find many people who would put Mutant League Football high on their list of the greatest Sega Genesis games. Overall, it's a good game -- not great, but good.
Not bad, but could have been better.
Mega Fun (Jul, 1993)
Entertainment Weekly (Oct 08, 1993)
Mutant League revels in the kind of sick humor that Mortal Kombat only dabbles in, but it hasn't drawn nearly as much attention-perhaps because only aliens, mutants, and robots are involved, rather than realistic human characters.
The Video Game Critic (Jan 31, 2001)
The graphics are only fair, and the choppy animation makes it tough to tell what's going on. The imaginative fields provide obstacles like pits, rocks, and mines, but these are more annoying than fun. The best part about this game is the audibles. These trick plays allow you to do crazy things like put dynamite in the ball, use a rocket pack, confuse the other team, or kill the referee (literally). You have limited use of these, so you'll want to use them strategically. The gameplay itself is amusing, but definitely not up to Madden standards. The passing windows are especially confusing to use. Sometimes you think you're throwing a bomb to the receiver in the right window, only to discover he's just two yards to your left! The non-stop grinding music, coupled with each coach's indecipherable gibberish make this game sonically annoying. Still, it is a nice change of pace from the standard football action.
