If you like platform thrills, good solid gaming, maybe even cute characters, go get this now. Another must-have title for the N64, and the only game I'll be playing this Summer. It's as simple as that.
The Game Hoard (Jan 24, 2020)
Banjo-Kazooie isn’t just some goofy adventure about a bear and a bird saving a little girl from a witch. It’s one of the best video games ever made.
Total! (Germany) (Jun, 1998)
Nintendo Life (Apr 01, 2009)
In its day, Banjo Kazooie revolutionised platforming: it brought together impeccable gameplay, fantastic level design, great music, and a perfect story - from start to finish, the game was a joy to play. There really are no gripes about it: the controls work, it’s the right length, and there is immense replayability present. Over a decade has passed by since its release, yet still to find fault in this game would be splitting hairs – everyone should own a copy!
GamePro (US) (Nov 24, 2000)
Banjo is a bearish keeper, one of the best games for the N64, and a true modern classic.
Consoles Plus (Aug, 1998)
IGN (Jun 30, 1998)
Seriously folks, Banjo-Kazooie is another reason to buy an N64. This is the best 3D platformer I have ever played, and a more than worthy successor to Super Mario 64. From the beginning to the surprise ending, everything about this game screams quality. The kicker is that this game will work in conjunction with its sequel, Banjo-Tooie. Get your copy now. Rare has done it again.
Video Games (Jun, 1998)
Nintendojo (1998)
Banjo-Kazooie is the kind of game that sends reviewers thumbing through their thesaurus in search of new words to describe its greatness. I can honestly say that it’s as true today as it was the day of release. Few games on any system have approached the combined quality of its visuals, sound, and gameplay while remaining enjoyable for kids and adults alike. If by some tragic oversight you have not played this game yet, you’re missing out. Next to Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie is still the only other platformer for the N64 that deserves to be in the collection of each and every Nintendo fanatic.
GameSpot (Jul 01, 1998)
If you were a fan of Mario 64, then it's pretty apparent that you're going to like Banjo-Kazooie as well. BK may be a Mario clone, but that isn't exactly a bad thing. In fact, it's a pretty good thing. In a world filled with mediocre N64 games, it's nice to see another truly great game on the system.
Gamers who were blown away by the size and scope of Super Mario 64 will be shocked to discover that it takes ages just to get from one level entrance to another in this game. This is one game that you definitely will not be finishing in a weekend.
Ultra 64 (Sep, 1998)

Bravo !
Everything works well in this game. The experience is absolutely captivating. The graphics are phenomenal, but what's cool is that they're just a teaser for the incredible game play.
Game Revolution (Jul 01, 1998)
All in all, this is the best platform game that I have played in a long time. Of course, it follows the basic formula of a platformer - kidnapped female, evil castle, jump on enemies, etc. But the reason the formula still exists is due to the fact that, occasionally, it works really well. Banjo-Kazooie is a case where the cliche works to perfection. Although we question Nintendo's blatant violation of the genetic cloning ban put in place by the president, they did so for a good cause, and a damn good game.
Classic-games.net (Aug 27, 2021)
Banjo Kazooie is a fantastic game and one of the Nintendo 64’s best. Rare crafted a winner with varied gameplay, incredible graphics, and a meaty quest. Whether it’s the original N64 game or its various Xbox releases I urge all platformer fans to give this one a shot, you won’t regret it.
GameTrip.net (Nov 03, 2013)
Jeuxvideo.com (May 05, 2009)
When it is available, Banjo and Kazooie will simply be the state of the art in N64 gaming. No 3D game looks as solid, beautiful and exciting as BK. The game world is brilliantly designed, the controls wonderfully balanced, the structure ingenious, the challenge constant without becoming laborious. Engaging, humourous, absorbing: BK sets a new standard in platform games.
Rare has exceeded our expectations again with this masterpiece that is the deal of the century at only $49.99 at most places. With great Rumble Pak capability and EEPROM saving (no controller pak), Rare has just added to the games flavor. I have not even ventured into some of the games areas simply to save the incredible experience for your gaming. It\'s quite simple, if you have a N64, then you need Banjo-Kazooie. It\'s hard to say how impressed we\'ll be with future Marios after this one. For now Banjo has the nod with detailed, 3D graphics, crisp sound, beautfiul control and the best gameplay seen on the N64. Excellent job Rare and Nintendo.
The British designers have put Nintendo's top Japanese development teams to shame with Banjo-Kazooie, a stunning 3D platformer. Banjo-Kazooie is the best 3D platformer since Mario 64, and we can only wonder what miraculous game Rare will produce next. This is one of the few must-buy games on the Nintendo 64.
The Video Game Critic (Jun 19, 2003)
The graphics are outstanding, brimming with subtle details like cracks in rocks, shimmering water, and flowers blowing in the grass. The music, audio effects, and dialogue are expertly performed, although their childlike nature may turn off some mature gamers. All things considered, Banjo Kazooie is a terrific game that is adored by legions of fans.
Retro Game Reviews (Jul 20, 2021)
Banjo-Kazooie is a great launch for the series thanks to its tightly crafted level design that's packed with wonderment and entertaining missions. It does lean too heavily on excessive collectability (which could deter some casual players from seeing it through to the end), but the platforming is such high quality that it's worth the effort.
HappyPuppy (Jul 29, 1998)
The technical virtuosity and solid gameplay of Banjo-Kazooie, however, more than compensate for its lapses. Graphically, this is the most impressive N64 title to date, and the control scheme is superb. While the somewhat underwhelming levels don't always compel you to go on, the challenge of finding things will. The number of hidden areas will make the game replayable, though a single run-through takes about 25 hours. If there must be clones, then make more of them like Banjo-Kazooie.
Banjo Kazooie is a great adventure, with loads and loads of fun for any gamer young, old, or somewhere in between. While it fails to achieve the lofty status of greatest platform game of all time, still held by an overweight plumber, Banjo Kazooie is a close second, and that ain’t half bad.
Edge (Jul 17, 1998)
While unable to match Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie leaves the numerous PlayStation 3D platformers floundering in its wake. There’s no doubt that Rare has constructed a towering technical achievement with this title. Just as Donkey Kong Country redefined the limits of 16bit console visuals, so Banjo-Kazooie does for the current generation of machines. Fresh faces on the videogame scene are likely to find Banjo a rewarding investment. But beneath the good looks this is platforming-by-numbers, with the player channelled through a tight script that is brought into sharp relief by a lack of innovation in the control system and gameplay. Rare’s title relies on the proven formulas of yesterday – not daring to be different – an unavoidable factor which will leave videogame cognoscenti wondering what all the fuss is about.
Still, the game is great any way you slice it. The flaws I mentioned throughout the above review (particular the numerous items you must collect) have crippled numerous other titles within the genre, but here they hardly seem to matter. Banjo-Kazooie is that rare platformer that proves developers don't always need new ideas to produce something great; they just need a bear and a bird.
Banjo-Kazooie isn't going to win any awards for originality, but who really cares? If you have to borrow a little to make a fun, absorbing adventure, so be it. As long as it keeps you entertained, what else matters?
Random Access (Apr 10, 2013)
Banjo-Kazooie is considered a classic Nintendo 64 title, and it's one of the games for which Rare is most famous. It's a representation of their most creative and fruitious period, sayeth many. And I would agree, it's pretty good. But as much as they tried, it's not their best. The sequel, Banjo-Tooie, is an improvement on Banjo-Kazooie in every way, and I would recommend Banjo-Tooie over this. For purity's sake, however, Banjo-Kazooie should still be experienced to see where the universal love for the bear and the bird began.
GameCola.net (Jul, 2003)
But all things aside, Banjo-Kazooie is an incredible game! I would highly recommend getting out your old, dusty N64 and playing it right away. You won't be disappointed.
