Xbox 360Jive Magazine (Oct 09, 2007)
Every NBA star captured perfectly down to their signature dunks, passes, and shots. The computer AI is the best ever. Witness Lebron dismantle your defense with crisp passes and thunderous tomahawk dunks. Watch in amazement as you try to contain Kobe, cuz there is no stopping him. You can even change the dribble controls to the right stick ala NBA Live. This game has it all. If you love the NBA you'll LOVE THIS GAME. This game however has a slight learning curve, it's not instant pick up and play. YOu'll have to get used to the controls and go into practice mode a bit before you can truly appreciate the splendor that is this game. The slam dunk contest is really fun. check it out.

There is a reason why I like 2K Sports and Visual Concepts. They provide the type of game that a true fan of the sport will enjoy. The game has excellent graphics and animations, a franchise mode that is rivaled by no one, and even modes aimed to people want an arcade experience sans the simulation aspects.

NBA 2K8 is superior to last year's game in almost every way, which is no mean feat, as on this website NBA 2K7 it was rated 8.9 by yours truly. There's loads of new content with the gameplay being better than ever, and the AI providing a good test of your skills. The odd nag could be raised with some of the in-game navigation but nothing in any way detracts from the overall package. This is a game that's sure to please both casual and hardcore hoops fans alike, and is one of the best basketball games released on any console in the 2000’s.

PlayStation 31UP (Oct 16, 2007)
But in the end, this game's brilliant A.I. on offense, the lightning-quick load times, the remarkably improved faces of Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, the new dunk competition minigame, and the removal of 24/7 mode are a load of positives that far outweigh the hang-ups. Madden NFL 08 beat All-Pro Football 2K8, NHL 08 torched NHL 2K8, but there's no doubt NBA 2K8 trumps Live by plenty. It's the hoops game to get this year, and an important victory for 2K Sports.

With NBA 2K8, you're looking at the best of all worlds. What worked last year is still there, and some great improvements have been made. It's the most fun and realistic game of video basketball available, despite it's few flaws.

Overall NBA 2K8 is just another great basketball game, packed with features and modes that are sure to keep fans and determined newbies happy at least until the 2K9 comes along or a rival franchise gets its act together.

PlayStation 3GameZone (Oct 08, 2007)
Games don’t have to look the best to play the best. But when both the gameplay and graphic features are at the top of the league, you know you’re playing more than another annual update. You’re playing the next evolution in NBA 2K.

Xbox 360GameZone (Oct 11, 2007)
This is the best version of the NBA 2k series in a long time. It’s a fresh breath of air and I am glad to see where the series is heading. If you are tired of the World Series hunt and the unpredictable NFL, pick up NBA 2k8 for a preview of what’s to come with the upcoming NBA season.

PlayStation 3Cheat Code Central (2007)
Overall, NBA 2K8 is a great game to play. It feels very different from last year, which means that the developers didn't rest on their laurels and give us the same game with a few additions. Some of the additions are better than others while some hopefully won't find their way into 2K9, but ultimately 2K8 is still the best basketball experience on the market for those that prefer their sports games to feel real.

PlayStation 3Game Over Online (Nov 26, 2007)
NBA 2K8 is a great basketball simulation, and it does a lot of things right. This game sticks with the familiar formula that has made it great the last few years, and that's the best and not so best part of it. I would have liked to see some more innovation, as the game, apart from some minor things, plays very similar to last year's entry. But hey, if it ain't broke, why fix it, right? If you're a fan of basketball games, I definitely recommend picking this one up, as it is the best basketball offering this year.

PlayStation 3Daily Game (Oct 24, 2007)
Truth be told, though, even in spite of these offensive shortcomings, NBA 2K8 is a fun game to play and, at least in presentation, mimics a real-life NBA game to perfection. The scoring seems nerfed, which undermines a lot of the good things Visual Concepts has done in NBA 2K8, yet the game still manages to impress and entertain. With a bit more user-friendly attention next year, NBA 2K9 could be the one basketball game to rule them all.

Xbox 360Daily Game (Oct 24, 2007)
The presentation and feel of the game is near-perfect, but the actual gameplay, particularly on offense, comes up short and frustrating. Lock-On D is a nice feature as well, but it can be a crutch.

Xbox 360XboxZone (Australia) (Nov 11, 2007)
NBA2k8 is an amazing NBA title and definitely sets the bench in all aspects of the game giving the gamers a large amount of options and game modes many of which will cater for different styles of play. NBA2k8 is one of the best sports games around if not the best basketball title around I recommend this game to all types of gamers especially sports nuts as there are plenty of options and modes to keep you entertained for months on end.

Xbox 360Game Positive (Oct 06, 2007)
Even with its handful of issues, this year is a rarity for sports games. After Madden's near reinvention, it's incredible to have another game that plays not just well, but incredibly. Yes, there are issues with the Slam Dunk contest and some of the controls, but the online mode alone far exceeds anything that is offered elsewhere. The commentary is generally spot-on and the game is truly a spectacle to watch once players get past the learning curve. If this game is any indication, it seems that 2008 might finally be the year that sports games truly make the leap to next-gen. At the very least, NBA 2K8 is one of the best basketball games of the year.

Xbox 360TeamXbox (Oct 24, 2007)
It's not without its issues, but NBA 2K8 is still one heck of a basketball game. While the developers definitely misfired with the Lock-on D mechanics, the new animation system changes the gameplay quite a bit, as does the ability to learn how to run plays on the fly. The game's lasting legacy may be the introduction of an emotional element to the Association mode. You'll start to look at franchise simulations in a different light after playing this game, and we really hope that other developers take a page from 2K's design playbook. If you're looking for a new basketball experience, look no further than NBA 2K8.

It is rare to find a sports game where you're in awe of the moves you see onscreen, but it's something that happens routinely with 2K8. Rather than get upset about how the CPU is picking you apart, you'll find yourself admiring how it happened and then resolving to return the favor the next time down the court. It's just too bad that such problems as missed layups, poor instructions, and a somewhat stale association mode are present because even with these problems, NBA 2K8 is one of the greatest basketball games in recent memory. Whether you're a casual basketball fan or a total hoops nut, this is the game for you.

PlayStation 3ZTGameDomain (2007)
NBA 2K8 excels at just about everything with only minimal gripes that could easily be ironed out next year. I know it is a cliché statement to make that with these improvements the game could really take off next year, but it is true. However, fans of the sport, whether casual or hardcore, should really do themselves a favor and pick up this fantastic hoops sim. The animation system is absolutely enthralling to view, the association mode is deeper than Scrooge McDuck’s money bin, and the overall game looks and plays better than any other title in the genre. Don’t wait for next year if you are in the market for a new NBA title when there is plenty here to love right now.

Overall you'll be making a good decision if you select NBA 2K8 as your basketball game of choice this season. Aside from the aforementioned issues it plays a pretty good game of basketball and looks even better than it plays. There are a lot of game modes and the online support is great, so you'll get plenty of gameplay out of this title.

Xbox 360PAL Gaming Network (PALGN) (Nov 07, 2007)
It’s hard to pick out the faults of a game like NBA 2K8. Last year’s game was solid, but this year they’ve pulled most of the kinks out, replaced the lesser elements of the game and tightened up many areas of the on court play. NBA 2K8 looks great and plays better, and outside of tweaking the trick and dodge moves and making the AI more devious, we can’t really think of more that Visual Concepts can improve upon. NBA 2K8 is a must buy for all basketball fans, and anyone after a solid sports game.
85
Xbox 360GamersMark (Nov 15, 2007)
When it comes down to it, the net statistics of each game is close to the real thing, it moves like the real thing, and the results are often satisfying even after a hard fought loss. The main problem this year is how many gameplay tweaks seem half-baked or half-explained and how there’s no rhyme or reason to defensive play. This is still by far the best basketball game out there for mirroring the NBA, nothing else is even close, and it’s still the hardest working basketball series out there year in year out in trying to better itself. It’s worth purchasing, and it’s still the king, but the way the game is tuned frustrates. It frustrates not just in the literal sense, but also in how the game keeps reinventing itself year after year, coming so close to perfection but never quite getting there.

NBA 2K8 is an impressive game and one which sports fans should add to their PS3 collections. The graphics and audio are great and the gameplay also engrossing. There's a lengthy franchise mode here too which could have you playing for months, unless you tire of the game by then. If there are a couple of downsides to this years title it's that there hasn't been any radical changes or additions to the game to push it up to the next level, and the loss of the 24/7 mode is a little disappointing. NBA 2K8 is on the shelves now, do yourselves a favour and check it out (and certainly choose this over the dire NBA Live 08.

In fact, most of the game is fantastic. Even with its hiccups, this is a game that is hard not to give a blanket recommendation to because as far as NBA games go, this is still the king of the virtual court.

All in all NBA 2k8 isn’t that much of an improvement compared to last year. Although there are lots of new things to discover, they all too often are bit bugged or just don’t feel like their finished yet. If people over at 2k manage to get rid of this problem, I promise you we’ll have one killer-game on our hands next year. Of course we’re stuck with NBA 2k8 now, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It does offer enough progression to be interesting. I’m sure every basketball fan will buy this, but for people who’re new to this, I think you better search for a copy of 2k7 rather than 2k8.

PlayStation 3Retrogaming History (Nov 20, 2008)

PlayStation 3AceGamez (2007)
NBA 2K8 is still far and away that best game of basketball you are going to find. EA might have got their act together this year, but they are still a way off challenging the almighty 2K series. Naysayers might argue that the engine is due an overhaul, but honestly, when you can release a game this good with the engine that you have, what's the point of starting from scratch? The day that 2K sports have to completely revamp their NBA title probably isn't all that far away, but for the time being this more than suffices; the animations are breathtaking, the gameplay as solid as ever and the list of game modes is as robust as any game on the market. Believe me, this might only be a refinement of previous instalments, but it is a game refined to the point of near perfection.
80
PlayStation 3Gamernode (Nov 11, 2007)
There a number of other problems as well, but it's hard not to suggest 2K8 to anyone in the market for a solid NBA game. The new Association mode will provide plenty to do offline, while online leagues will do the same for those who like playing multiplayer. The core game just plays so well and looks so realistic that it's hard not to forgive it for having all of these other issues.
80
PlayStation 3GameTrailers (2007)
It’s rare that a series takes as serious a step backwards as NBA 2K8 has this season. It’s missing modes and gameplay features from last year’s game, while adding subtle changes that few players will notice or make use of. Last year the 2K series was the best roundball game on the market by a landslide. This year, it’s dribbled the ball out of bounds with no defender in sight.

NBA 2K8 is this year's version of an already very accomplished basketball series with an updated roster and some additional enhancements that, whilst not court shattering, add to the overall experience. I would recommend it even if you have NBA 2K7, but you need to realise that it's a game that needs a lot of time and effort put in; make that investment and you'll reap dividends of enjoyment in return.

PlayStation 2GamesRadar (Oct 09, 2007)
While it may not sport All-Star Weekends, FIBA World Tournaments, or hoops-flavored soap operas like its competition, one thing is for sure - NBA 2K8's got the best on-court basketball experience on the PS2 this year. That's enough for us to declare it the champ.
80
Xbox 360Darkstation (Oct 02, 2007)
Although this is a great game of basketball, its improvements over last year aren’t as significant as you would probably expect. Instead much of the experience felt like a tune up of last year’s game, with some more features and modes added on the side. This is a great game of basketball, and if you really want to get into the game of basketball, NBA 2K8 is a great choice.

Xbox 360Gamernode (Nov 11, 2007)
The new dunk contest and other modes are nice, but the core gameplay is what should be what catches your eye, and NBA 2K8 nails it. It's got issues, but plays well enough to overcome them and still be a fun and addictive game.

Xbox 360GameSpy (Oct 05, 2007)
NBA 2K8 is hands-down the best basketball game available, though it is facing very strong competition for the first time in a long while. There are some issues where it can definitely be improved, including a whole lot of missed layups, a very poorly constructed instruction manual which fails to impart any information that could be found in the game's setup menus, and an interface that hasn't been overhauled for years and could do with a large amount of tweaking and polishing for usability. Overall, though, this is the game to play if you're a hoops fan, and one you don't want to miss out on.
80
Xbox 360Operation Sports (Oct 11, 2007)
The games not perfect. There are flaws, issues, and annoyances that cannot be ignored. Some of them can be corrected with slider adjustments, others we’re left to deal with. For me, none of the “problems” prevented me from really enjoying this game. With a few minor tweaks, it’s the best NBA game that I have ever played. Doesn’t excuse the issues that are there, but the issues also won’t keep me from playing for months and months to come.

Xbox 360Worth Playing (Nov 06, 2007)
NBA 2K8 is an excellent game and shines again, but the franchise has been strong for years. It's as good as everyone expects it to be, but that's also the problem; the game is great, but it plays it too safe. I appreciate the formula that Visual Concepts has built, but I've been playing the same formula for quite some time. With little additions here and there, NBA 2K8 proves that the 2K series is the basketball game to play, but how much longer will the franchise be able to play it safe before EA rises from the ashes?
79
PlayStation 3IGN (Oct 02, 2007)
In many ways, NBA 2K8 is an improved game on the court. But there are a lot of minor issues that really drag it down. Over the course of my first dozen games, I was in love. But as the season wore on, the issues began piling up to a point that it became a source of frustration. The Lock-on D gaff is inexcusable and the lackluster defensive AI allows decent players to tear it up on offense. Jason Williams should not be dropping 30 points a game. Yet he won the MVP in year two of my franchise. Still, any hoops fan should give NBA 2K8 a look. It's certainly the best basketball game on any system this year. The Association is a solid franchise mode and, if VC can iron out its AI and gameplay issues, next year's model could be something very special.

PlayStation 2IGN (Oct 05, 2007)
NBA 2K8 is a decent game of basketball, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt. With very few enhancements to the gameplay, dated visuals and old shooting issues still plaguing the title, NBA 2K8 one of those titles that barely escapes being a mild roster update. As long as you're willing to accept its flaws, you'll find an enjoyable basketball title here for your PS2.

Despite being upstaged this year by EA's excellent NBA Live 08, NBA 2K8 still does a nice job of walking the line between fast-paced arcade action and realistic simulation.

Overall NBA 2K8 is a solid basketball sim, and most fans and gamers alike will enjoy it thoroughly. It’s just that the game should have been so much more, and the gameplay far more enjoyable if Lock-on D hadn’t had existed. Hopefully it won’t in 2K9.

Xbox 360Video Game Generation (Nov 15, 2007)
NBA 2K8 is the best NBA game on the market right now. However, the lack of any sort of deep instruction booklet or a tutorial makes this a hard recommendation to new users or NBA Live transplants. This is a strange step for 2K Sports, who are notorious for almost overly thorough manuals. The on-the-court product is extremely solid, and the franchise mode is deep. The main thing hurting this score is the artificially high and newbie-unfriendly learning curve, combined with the minor annoyance of not having an opening day roster update (or opening month at this point). If you’re going to buy an NBA title this year, this should be it. However, be advised it may be difficult to pick up if you’re new to the series.

Ultimately, NBA 2K8 is another superbly entertaining basketball sim with some of the sickest visuals you've ever seen. Hoops aficionados will appreciate the attention to player detail and even-more-intensive franchise mode that's bound to suck away dozens of hours without you realizing it. However, room for improvement abounds, and there's also some serious competition from NBA Live 08, which sports more user-friendly shotmaking and ballhandling controls. Unlike last year, it's no easy cruise to the PS3 basketball championship for 2K this time around.

If online play is your thing we suggest you rent the game first. We experienced disconnect issues in four of our first seven online games and have seen roster validation error messages. Lobbies and ranked games remain almost identical to last year's version, and lag is not an issue during the game. Of course you might be wishing for lag when somebody posts Kobe up and does a spin/dunk animation on every offensive series. That's not a knock on 2K8 as much is it is a statement about online sports games -- people determined to cheese will find exploits, no matter how hard the dev team tries to create a "sim" environment. Shortcomings aside, we harken back to our Vince Carter analogy. Carter's star is fading, and the "next-gen" is already here in D-Wade, 'Bron and Melo. The PS2 version of 2K8 faces a similar challenge.

At the end of the day, NBA 2K8 is a pretty fun jaunt. It's not quite as satisfying as the Celtics adding Kevin Garnett and, Ray Allen to support Paul Pierce in one off-season, but what is? At least you can play as Larry Bird, via the 1980’s Eastern All-Stars. Don't for one second think I didn't spend a couple of hours draining threes from half court with my childhood hero, “Larry Legend”. Just don’t expect me to play NBA 2K8 for much longer than that.

If you own last year's game, and you're cool with dropping 30 dollars for what amounts to little more than a patch and some new rosters, you'll be reasonably satisfied with NBA 2K8. Just don't buy the game expecting any of the new features from the Xbox 360 and PS3--they aren't here.

Overall, you get what you pay for with this one. It's half the price of the stellar new-gen version of NBA 2K8 -- and pretty much half the game.
