PlayStation 2GamePro (US) (Sep 30, 2002)
It all adds up to a deep?and deeply exciting?racing game. The Need for Speed name once got the same props that Gran Turismo does today, but Hot Pursuit 2 erases the lingering tarnishes and returns it to its former glory.
PlayStation 2Gaming Nexus (Oct 11, 2002)
NFSHP2 takes the best aspects of Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit and makes them even better. The end result is a game that manages to deliver on nearly ever front, definitely the best arcade racing title to come out in the past 3 years. A huge step forward for the Arcade racer genre, this game is in a class of its own.
XboxShin Force (Jul 07, 2003)
It's been a while since I've stayed up all night playing a racing game. I know this game has been out for a while, but if you passed it up (like me) then you should be able to snag it for $20. EA delivers a top notch racing experience in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. The gameplay, Ferrari F50 and McLaren F1 make it worth the price of admission.
PlayStation 2PSX Extreme (Oct 04, 2002)
It took 4 years, but the Need for Speed franchise has finally been put back on its feet and planted in a new pot of soil. NFS: HP2 is easily one of the finest racing games to ever grace a console, and in a genre dominated by Gran Turismo, that's saying a lot. I haven't had this much fun, joy, excitement, and an adrenaline rush with a racing title in a very long time. Visually, HP2 is a gorgeous game. The sense of speed doubles the whole experience, and without it the game wouldn't have been as fantastic as it is. Just look at the Xbox and GameCube versions, they are sub-par and boring titles because they have a very sluggish sense of speed, not to mention awkward visual presentation. By now, if you're not convinced that Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is one of the finest titles of the year and on the PS2, then I don't know what else to say. Do not pass this game up. Run to your store right now and pick up a copy of Hot Pursuit 2, if you know what's good for you.
PlayStation 2Gaming Target (Oct 10, 2002)
Whatever flaws exist in NFS: Hot Pursuit 2, they're pretty much ignored and let off the hook thanks to the outstanding gameplay and features. No doubt that EA and Black Box have taken the NFS series to a whole new level here - one that should please arcade racing fans all around. If Porsche Unleashed disappointed you, don't fret about HP2, because this game takes the series back to the glory days - and surpasses them.
PlayStation 2GamersMark (Oct 10, 2002)
After its all said and done, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 may just be one of the finest, if not the finest arcade racer ever created for a console. It’s very, very fast and creates a sense of suspense that I have never experienced with a racing game before. It’s a truly unique experience that no PS2 owner should pass up. Nothing feels better than outsmarting the police while fighting off an opponent while driving through back roads. Even if you’re not a huge racing buff or gearhead, I strongly urge you to try this game out, it’s definitely no your typical round-and-round race car game. This is a peddle-to-the-metal, in your face and on your tail, adrenaline rush. Buckle up PS2 owners, this game will be sure to give you that dose of speed you’ve been missing for quite a while.
PlayStation (Mar 15, 2005)
Night racing and weather effects (so prevalent in the first Hot Pursuit) have been sadly excluded for the sequel. Day and evening times can be selected, as well as clear or overcast weather, but they're an entirely visual aesthetic. EA went all out in the original Hot Pursuit, letting the player choose various times of day; rain, snow, or sunshine; mirrored, forward, and/or backwards tracks; and El Nino - the first hidden fictional super car in the series since the original Need For Speed's Warrior. Still, considering what they accomplished with this sequel, these trivial issues are mere litter on the development roadside. Maybe next time, eh? For now, though, if you're a racing enthusiast, you can't possibly go wrong with at least giving Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 a try.
PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic (Nov 14, 2002)
In case you have multiple consoles, I'd highly recommend getting the Playstation 2 version over the others. The graphics are more vibrant than the washed-out Xbox version, the control feels better, and you get a few extra modes such as "You Be the Cop". Overall, Hot Pursuit 2 provides some high-speed, thrilling racing action. I'll take this over Gran Turismo and Nascar any day.
PlayStation 2Gaming Age (Oct 04, 2004)
Straight up - Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is an outstanding arcade racer. It's fun, accessible, and you won't find anything better on the PS2...or GameCube for that matter. If you own an Xbox, however, Project Gotham Racing and Sega GT 2002 take advantage of the hardware's capabilities far better than NFS: HP2, so I'd recommend renting EA's title before a purchase to compare for yourself. If you don't own a PS2, you'd probably be happy if you didn't know that a superior version was available....but you're reading this review, and I'd be remiss if I didn't draw attention to this inequality between versions. Still, the PS2 version of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is the new standard-bearer for arcade racing titles on consoles. Miss it at your peril.
PlayStation 2PGNx Media (Oct 25, 2002)
Those who were fans of the series on the PC will not be disappointed by what EA and Black box has to offer for the next gen consoles. I highly recommend purchasing this title to anyone who is a racing fan whether they enjoy arcade or simulation title. This game is sure to wet the whistle or whistles of any one of two people who pick this one up and play it. The transition from PC to next gen consoles for Electronic Arts is successful and is a much better game than it was on the PC. Too bad there is not an online mode to satisfy those who have the network. Even with its small amount of hold back this is a premier title.
PlayStation 2Game Revolution (Oct, 2002)
Despite the lack of cool crashes and the poor implementation of the replay feature, NFS: HP2 does just about everything else right and stand out as the best arcade racer to hit the PS2. With it's combination of really fun gameplay, good delivery, terrific tracks and robust modes, this is definitely worthy of gracing the collection of any console racing fan.
90 (Jan 07, 2003)
So, in conclusion: NFS: HP2 is the arcade racer with the highest ‘fun-factor’ out there. Great cars, very cool songs, fun gameplay. Go buy it.
PlayStation 2Netjak (Oct 18, 2002)
The only reason why I’m giving Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 five stars is because…well, that all I can give it. So if you have any other racing game, lose it and grab this title because you can’t go wrong with Need for Speed. You will definitely not be disappointed.
PlayStation 2IGN (Oct 03, 2002)
Certainly an antisocial sort of attitude, but that's what fictional entertainment is for, to provide an outlet for those kinds of fantasies. Hot Pursuit 2 has its finger right on the pulse of what makes an arcade racer fun. The controls are simple enough to grasp, but the driving challenges presented require real skill to complete, and it has an excellent reward structure to keep the player motivated through all of those challenges.
PlayStation 2GameSpy (Nov 01, 2002)
Featuring an incredible amount of gameplay modes for an arcade racing game, tight controls, and stunning graphics, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is the best arcade racing game available for the PlayStation 2. The missions could be a little more balanced and playing as the police can be frustrating, but you'll be hard pressed to find another driving game that's more addictive, challenging, and most importantly, fun.
PlayStation (Nov 01, 2002)
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Oct, 2002)
Back in the early nineties, the Need For Speed franchise was best known for its realistic recreation of cars and its commitment to simulating realistic driving experiences. Through the years, the series has shifted to an arcade approach for racing, and that new mentality is best represented in its Hot Pursuit editions.
WindowsGameplay (Benelux) (Oct 31, 2002)
Pure adrenalinekicks en verslavende gameplay samengeperst in één game. Een arcaderacer van de bovenste plank. Aanrader!
XboxGaming Target (Apr 10, 2003)
EA’s latest addition to the acclaimed Need for Speed series is here and it’s easily one of the best yet – Hot Pursuit 2 mixes exotic super cars, high speed police chases and some hardcore arcade-style racing for a heart-pumping, extremely fun-filled game. The game boasts an impressive track and car roster and has a rather well employed rewards system in place, and is certainly one of the better racers out on Xbox at the moment.
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Nov, 2002)
Dann wäre Need for Speed 6 in die 90er-Regionen vorgestoßen.
XboxGame Informer Magazine (Nov, 2002)
There was a time, before Gran Turismo, when racing games were free from competing in an endless game of "Who’s got the biggest garage?" Back then, all people demanded were some well-designed tracks, a nice selection of sports cars, and solid-feeling control. Games didn’t have to have their physics calculated down to the last drag coefficient, and they didn’t need to make sure they had the original paint colors available for the 1984 Honda Civic. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a throwback to those days, and is a refreshing alternative to the time-consuming and oftentimes grueling technical driving of Sega GT, Gran Turismo 3 and the like.
PlayStation 2GameZone (Oct 12, 2002)
The Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a great sequel that every racing fan will love. Since it's not a PS2 exclusive, Xbox and GameCube owners will be able to get in on the cop-evading fun that this game has to offer.
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Oct 07, 2002)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit II is the sequel to Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit, which was released in 1998 and was the third in Electronic Arts' venerable series of arcade-style driving games. Between then and now, however, EA has released two other Need for Speed games--High Stakes and Porsche Unleashed--which makes Hot Pursuit II the sixth game in the series, if you don't count the two V-Rally games that hit the market in the mid-'90s, that is. Confused? Well, never mind all that. All you need to know is that Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit II for the PlayStation 2 is not only one of the best games in this long-running series, but also one of the fastest, most visceral, and most polished racing games currently available for Sony's console.

WindowsPC Zone Benelux (Dec, 2002)
Realistisch?

WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Nov 14, 2002)
Das Fahren in Need for Speed macht Spaß. Ausrufezeichen! Punktum.
PlayStation 2Super Play (Sweden) (Oct, 2002)
Det här är läckert, snabbt och roligt. Kanske bästa spelet hittills i serien.
GameCubeOfficiel Nintendo Magazine (Dec, 2002)

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 has a charm that's characteristic to every title of the series. Maybe the fact that no NFS game was installed recently on my system contributed to the overall enthusiasm and impression but after a few days of "work" the fire has calmed down and I can see clearly now. This is a good game for everybody and a medium one for NFS fans. Maybe next time EA will listen to us more and maybe then they will fix their recently tainted image. We'll just repay them for the moment with our tainted love.
WindowsUOL Jogos (Oct 31, 2002)
PlayStation 2HonestGamers (Oct 12, 2002)
Regardless of the mode in which you choose to play, the experience ends up being the same deal. You race through a track, you practice your cornering and learn the shortcuts (failing to do so quickly spells the end of any chance of placing more than third or so), and you get ticked off as you hit a tree and your car takes an apparent eternity to turn around. Still, the good in this title far outweighs the bad. Few of the weaknesses are even worth your attention. As far as racing games go, it's hard to have more fun on the system than you can have with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. If you have an even mild appreciation for the genre, this is the one title that most belongs in your collection.
PlayStation 2Gameplanet (Oct 28, 2002)
Burnout 2 is almost upon us, and many of you will be wanting to compare the two games. Regardless of how the Burnout sequel turns out, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a top-notch, and classy game in its own right. A next-gen title taking huge advantage of the PS2's capabilities. This is the case, Burnout, or no Burnout. The need for speed still burns strong in our veins!
PlayStation (UK) (Oct 28, 2002)
In the end it comes down to a matter of quality. Although Hot Pursuit 2 is an excellent racer, well worth buying and stuffed with many hours of gameplay, Burnout 2 is all that and more, without having to obey strict license agreements regarding damage. Malnourished Cube owners will be pleased to discover that their system has a new king of racers, although Xbox owners will be less impressed as they fire up Project Gotham again. Hot Pursuit 2's points system is a facile alternative. On the PS2, only those bored of Burnout 2 need apply, and in all honesty, there can't be too many of you.
PlayStation 2GameCell UK (Apr 04, 2003)
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 is a good, solid blast of racing action, there are plenty of gorgeous cars to drive and even more gorgeous tracks to drive 'em round. There are very few bad things I can say other than the fact that there's an occasional bit of dodgy collision detection and a few faults in the handling. If you want depth and tactics in your games then you should probably look elsewhere, because Need For Speed does exactly what it says on the box, it offers you fast cars and fast racing, no more, no less.
WindowsActionTrip (Oct 23, 2002)
Regardless of your taste in video games, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 should be on your buying list this month, because it has more to offer than your average racer nowadays. The arcade gameplay can be fun, the tracks are huge, and there's tons of different cars models you can try out. Although, I'll have to admit that the force-feedback was sorely missed when the game was played on the PC keyboard. But, the physics were definitely adjusted in the PC version, making the in-game vehicle more realistic All things considered, NfS: HP2 is one heck of racing experience.
XboxGameplanet (Nov 06, 2002)
Finally this game comes packed with game modes. Hot Pursuit mode puts you in over 30 very different events, ranging from delivering a Lotus Elise to a specific point on the track to being the cop and filling your quota of arrests within the allotted time. Championship mode is similar to Hot Pursuit mode except in this mode it's all about racing.

WindowsGameSpy (Nov 09, 2002)
Face it: if you're the kind of gamer who demands realism in your driving games, then this isn't the game for you. Pick up a copy of NASCAR Racing 2002 or Grand Prix 4 instead. But, if you're an arcade racing fan who doesn't own a PS2 and can get past the PC version's flaky controls, you should find a fun ride in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2.
XboxGameZone (Oct 14, 2002)
All in all, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a pretty fun racing game. It has great controls, awesome cars, cool tracks, and a great multiplayer mode. Playing by yourself could use some work, but if you don't mind the unintelligent cops, or the racers that seem to ignore everything around them, there are 33 cool levels to enjoy. This game is definitely worth a rent, and if you're craving for a racing game right now, this is not a bad option.
WindowsGameZone (Nov 01, 2002)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for the PC is not the best version of this really great game, but it still has enough racing action to be top of its class. With okay graphics and a few stutters and bumps along the way, there is plenty of racing modes and an option to play with other gamers using internet that makes this a worthwhile game for PC gamers.
76 (Nov 01, 2002)

WindowsAbsolute Games ( (Oct 28, 2002)

Overall, I like the style of this new Need For Speed, but even after countless iterations, there's still room for improvement.
GameCubeGame Informer Magazine (Nov, 2002)
What’s not to love? Okay, I found a few things, but they’re so nit-picky and minor and just, well, beside the point that they aren’t going to garner much space in this little review. The point is that you drive fast cars that you’ll never be able to afford, try to avoid getting busted, and finish some fairly uninteresting missions. The graphics are great and the only deterrents are some questionable physics and the idea that a cop could catch me in my Opal.
GameCubeGameZone (Oct 12, 2002)
This is above all an arcade racer, so anyone expecting Gran Turismo on the GameCube will be sorely mistaken. The game doesn’t have a very accurate physics model, nor do I believe it was meant to be. It’s just fun, simple racing. The game’s plethora of levels, game modes, and exotic cars to unlock is sure to impress anyone, although the game does have some serious gameplay issues. The game moves at a very sluggish pace due in part to the bulky handling of the cars. The cars lack an overall feeling of speed, as they handle the same at any velocity.

GameCubeIGN (Sep 27, 2002)
If you're rich enough to own any of the lavish cars in Electronic Arts' latest racer Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, just buy the game. You can afford it. Despite any of the shortcomings in this otherwise exciting racer, you'll probably be thrilled just to do these kinds of dangerous things with the car you own. However, we know most of you can barely afford car insurance (if you can even drive yet), let alone a new videogame, so there are some things to consider regarding the latest addition to the venerable Need for Speed franchise. It has all the expensive foreign cars, the huge tracks, the thrill of the chase, and everything you'd expect from EA's reliable racer. In fact, it's an arcade driving experience we recommend checking out, but if you're picky about racers, and we're sure you are, it's by no means perfect. Learn before you burn those tires, led-foots.
WindowsGame Over Online (Nov 08, 2002)
NFS:HP2 delivers an adequate racing experience. The thirty-something single player tiered mission structure provide plenty of play. Points you gain in the tiered play can be used to unlock dozens and dozens of tracks and cars for more single player action. In addition, there is a multiplayer (which I don’t see as all that different as I can’t tell if it is other people or the computer driving the other cars) over LAN or Internet, but I found the controls over the internet suffered a significant lag, even through my cable modem. As a whole, NFS:HP2 is just not enough of a game to drag me away from Mafia or GTA3, but in my opinion I’ve never seen a racing game that is. That’s my slant, and as the reader you’re going to have to take that into account.

Electronic Arts recently released three versions of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit II, the sequel to the 1998 arcade-style racing game Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit. This fast-paced driving game is currently available for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube, with a PC version to follow at the end of the month. You'd expect the console versions of this game to be identical, but strangely enough, they're not. While the Xbox and GameCube iterations of Hot Pursuit II are in fact exact ports of one another, they're markedly different from their PlayStation 2 cousin, and in this case, "different" doesn't mean "better." In short, the Xbox and GameCube versions of Hot Pursuit II have slightly detuned graphics and mushier controls, and, inexplicably, they omit a variety of minute but tangible features found in the PlayStation 2 game.

A few weeks ago, Electronic Arts released three versions of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit II simultaneously. This sequel to the 1998 arcade-style driving game was made available for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube, but interestingly enough, not all three games were identical. While the PS2 version, which was developed by Black Box, is a wholly satisfying racing game with great graphics and a visceral sense of speed, the Xbox and GameCube versions of Hot Pursuit II are noticeably tamer in terms of control, graphics, and sound. That's because those two versions of the game were developed by a completely different company, EA Seattle, in order to ship on time alongside Hot Pursuit II for the PlayStation 2, which Electronic Arts considers to be the primary version of the game. Unfortunately for PC game players, EA didn't port the superior PS2 version of Hot Pursuit II to the PC. Instead, PC owners get a port of the less spectacular GameCube and Xbox versions of Hot Pursuit II.
XboxIGN (Sep 30, 2002)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a decent, but flawed arcade racer. The problem any developer will have when making a racing game for the Xbox is how to make it stand out in an already crowded genre full of excellent racing games. Neither the police-chasing aspect nor the brand name are enough to help elevate this game into the upper-echelon of Xbox racing games.
WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Feb, 2003)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 may not break new ground, but it’s still one of the best high-octane racing experiences around, and the better graphics and tougher cop A.I. are great improvements to a sweet game. Too bad the lame Career modes can’t match the rest of the game's quality.
PlayStation 2PlayFrance (Apr 11, 2003)

WindowsFiringSquad (Nov 26, 2002)
Hot Pursuit 2 is a pretty solid game, but it just doesn’t offer that much more if you’ve been playing these games over the past few years. The cartooney feel of the game is fun if you like that sort of thing. We weren’t expecting something as serious as NASCAR, or even the level of depth that Porsche Unleashed gave. The ability to be the cop and call up backup such as the chopper and spike strips is a noble attempt but just not enough. They are fun to use but a few tweaks do not make a game.

GameCubeGameSpy (Nov 01, 2002)
Reviewing multiplatform games is normally a snap because, aside from a few graphical issues, all three versions are basically the same. But this time around, this statement couldn't be any further from the truth. And while the GameCube version of Hot Pursuit 2 gives players all the car-chasing, roadblock-blasting action they can handle, it's a disappointment when held up against its nearly peerless PlayStation 2 counterpart.
XboxGameSpy (Nov 01, 2002)
Despite it's dilapidated state when compared with the PlayStation 2 version, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for the Xbox is still a fun arcade racer. It's one of those games where it seems like the most illogical thing that can happen regularly does (like a car coming in the other lane at the exact wrong time), but the adrenaline rush from the police chases keeps you coming back for one more try. It's no technical marvel, but with plenty of cars and tracks to unlock and high-speed thrills it's worth a look. But if you own both systems pick up the PlayStation 2 version instead.

GameCubeNetjak (Nov 19, 2002)
Not a terrible game, but certainly it's full of flaws which make in no more than a decent rental. Apparently the Gamecube and Xbox versions were an afterthought, which is why they are inferior to the PS2 version. Instead of pushing for the simultaneous release, I would have rather they took a couple more months to polish the control/frame-rate issues and in doing so offer a strong game. You do get a nice selection of licensed cars and a strong line-up of tracks to unlock, unfortunately the performance issues make it unfulfilling in the end. If you own a PS2, buy that version!
