I am really, really stunned at how well Sonic Pocket Adventure turned out on the NeoGeo Pocket Color – the system needed a platform game, and Sonic delivers big-time. The cartridge is truly brimming with gaming options that will keep you coming back, especially if you're lucky enough to have access to two systems. Sonic Pocket Adventure is a cartridge no handheld library should be without. Yes, it has to be said: this game is a system-seller

Defunct Games (Jan 23, 2005)
As a game Sonic Pocket Adventure is outstanding. It manages to retain all the speed, punch and polish of its bigger brothers. Again I am knocked back by the power of the Neo Geo Pocket and yet again this is another reason to shove your NGPC under the nose of the nearest Game Boy owner and laugh at their astounded faces. But not only does Sonic look and sound great, it plays really well too.
The Video Game Critic (Apr 07, 2004)
I've always been a big Sonic fan, and Sonic Pocket Adventure really captures the spirit of those classic games on the Genesis. In fact, these stages are basically modified versions of those from the original Sonic games. If you've already played through those old games, this one will seem awfully familiar, but if you're new to the series, you're in for a treat.
Retro Game Reviews (May 02, 2016)
Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure is one of the series finest handheld games and it does an amazing job of cramming in most of what made the console versions so great. It's a huge technical achievement and despite its lack of difficulty it's the sort of game you can play through several times and still have a blast.

GameSpot (Feb 11, 2000)
Sonic Pocket's only serious flaw is that the game is over too quickly. Anyone who still has his Sonic chops in decent shape should be able to cruise through the game in a few hours, collecting around half of the puzzle pieces along the way. The save-game system, which lets you start on any level that you have already played, makes the game seem even shorter. But it's still a worthwhile ride, and one that any serious Sonic fan should definitely take.
Gaming Age (1999)
Despite these minor, and I do stress minor, problems, the game is a great platformer with probably being one of the best reasons for owning a Neo Geo Pocket Color. It's a game that not only is a great platformer, but it also has a wide appeal to all sorts of different gamers. With Sonic leaving his roots behind on the Dreamcast, I sure do hope that SNK will produce a sequel that will match and surpass this already great game.

The big question you’re all asking me now is whether you should start searching for a Neo Geo Pocket Color just to buy this game. The answer is yes and no. Yes if you’re huge into classic gaming, since the cost of the game and the console won’t upset you. You’ll enjoy this game as well as plenty of the NGPC’s other games it has to offer. I’d say no if you’re just a casual gamer, as you’ll have to fork out about fifty to sixty bucks for the system and game and can get all of the content of this Sonic game and more in the Genesis originals. Sonic The Hedgehog Pocket Adventure as a whole is a very solid entry into the Sonic series and worthy of the Sonic title. It is far more playable then Sonic’s more recent 2D offerings, so for me it was worth the money.

The first thing I thought when I popped in this cart and took Sonic for a spin was, wow, they did it! Sega managed to bring back the fun (and memories) of the old-school 2-D 16-bit gaming era. I was reliving the glory days of Sonic on the Sega Genesis right there between my palms. What a wonderful feeling! Right down to the synthesized Se-ga sound byte introduction.
