NeonXSZ is a first-person and dogfighting shooter played controlling a space ship with the six degrees of freedom principle for movement in a zero-gravity environment. The game is set in a procedurally generated open world, with bright visuals, that can be explored entirely right away and in any direction. The story describes the presence of the player's ship as an "anomaly" in a virtual cyberspace environment. There is a never ending war going on between the system and viruses. The conflict with its two sides is further defined through four different factions with a persistent presence and influence in the game world. These are the OS and Antivirus, and Malware and Viruses. The player can choose to support one of the factions and choose a side, or just roam freely.

Choosing to support a certain faction establishes a permanent reputation. A faction can be supported by traveling to the Sphere, a large structure, where different types of challenge arenas can be completed for a faction. This provides the faction control of a piece of the game world, but also high-tech loot. Any enemy can be engaged and the strength of an enemy is determined by its ship and weapons. This means that taking on a very powerful opponent is risky and in some cases near impossible without upgrades, but if it is defeated it leaves behind the specific loot that determined the strength, providing the player's ship with the same powerful equipment. Loot and resources provide different types of upgrades, hulls and weapons.

It also incorporates some elements of RPG templates, as the loot left behind by enemies often provides bits of code tied to upgrades with a certain tech level. When 100% of an upgrade has been collected, it is available to use it. Movement is very fast and involves not only the horizontal and vertical axis, but also altitude and banking. The direction of movement can be changed instantly, leading to fast and hectic twitch-based combat.
