Dragon (Nov, 1992)
We usually are not fans of action games, but BattleToads is truly exceptional. If you like knocking heads, BattleToads is a game for your pad.
VideoGame (Aug, 1991)
Mean Machines (Apr, 1992)
Combining a variety of different game styles, great graphics, a neat sense of humour and some superb, challenging and highly addictive gameplay, Battletoads is a refreshing and original game which really grabbed me. The game is brilliantly designed to allow you to get just a little bit further each time you play, and give experts the potential to hone their skills and rack up enormous amounts of bonus points. It's this aspect that kept me coming back constantly, even after I'd finished the game! Battletoads is definitely one of the best Nintendo games I've played for quite a while and shouldn't be missed under any circumstances.
Total!! UK Magazine (Nov, 1992)
Amazing-looking arcader that sets standards, break moulds and does a lot of other groovy things too. It's the best blast I've seen in a long time.
Nintendo Power Magazine (Jun, 1991)
This is it! We've been psyched about the Battletoads since we first heard about them! Now that Rare and Tradewest are ready to cut loose with Battletoads.
Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Apr, 1992)
Music and sound matches the graphical quality, with a host of fitting tunes and thumping spot effects. There's even a ditty when you pause the game! All these touches, coupled with the wickedly addictive gameplay that's had us glassy-eyed in front of the NES, makes this one cart that you'd be toadally off your skull to miss!
Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Apr, 1992)
The story is funny, the characters are hilarious and the game itself is totally excellent. If you want a good alternative to the Turtles game, then this beats it by a mile. Probably the best beat 'em up available on the NES and certainly one of the best looking games for absolutely ages.
Arcade Attack (Apr 23, 2015)
Having said that, Battletoads is a work of art. Just don’t throw it out of the window, as tempting as it is…
Video Games & Computer Entertainment (May, 1991)
Battletoads has it all: Charismatic characters, gorgeous graphics, innovative play options, a perfectly balanced difficulty level and a wonderfully inane sense of humor. There's no doubt in my mind that this is going to be the biggest NES game of 1991.
Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) (Jun, 1991)
Excellent! Radical! Most triumphant! If Battletoads doesn't make you laugh at the hysterical animations, or fry your brain cells with utter amazement, you are reading the wrong mag! The amount of work that went into this game is phenomenal! This'll make up for Double Dragon.
Play Time (Jul, 1992)
Quebec Gamers (May 29, 2007)
Nintendo Magazine System UK (Oct, 1992)
With twelve big and varied levels to test your skills, Battletoads is a definite winner! Move over Turtles and make way for the new breed!
Questicle.net (Feb, 2011)
I don’t recommend Battletoads for everyone: if you’re a fan of leisurely strolls through the park and warm summer days, you’d be advised to stay away from the Toads’ quest. If, however, you like the feel of brass knuckles against your face or you like to sit outside in -20 degree weather and feel the frost grow on various body parts, indulge.
Retro Game Age (Jul 16, 2012)
Whether the tall challenge lain before you is worth it is entirely subjective. As someone who was eventually able to overcome it I’d say yes but I am fully aware everyone has a different breaking point. What I can say is that if you stick with it Battletoads will reward you with awesome gameplay with a wide assortment of play mechanics at every turn. And if you beat it it definitely counts as a badge of honor.
The Video Game Critic (Jul 01, 2007)
The quirky animations are comical, and you'll even see Space Invader icons towing power-ups. Sadly, most gamers won't appreciate all that Battletoads has to offer, because the game is too [expletive] hard - even with continues! Battletoads supports two-player simultaneous action, but that doesn't make things any easier. If not for my trusty Game Genie, I don't think I would have been able to review this game. Except for the excessive difficulty, there's not much to dislike, except maybe that annoying drumbeat that plays when the game is paused. Battletoads will suck you in with its quality gameplay, only to demoralize you with its relentless difficulty. Even if you like your games hard as nails, Battletoads will beat you into submission and teach you the meaning of pain. Punk!
Classic-games.net (May 08, 2020)
Battletoads is a fun yet frustrating game that could have been more. Battletoads has some of the highest production values on the system and is full of content. Whether you will stick around to see all of it is questionable.
Power Unlimited (Sep, 1993)
HonestGamers (Staff reviews only) (Mar 09, 2013)
Battletoads featured beautiful visuals, a rocking soundtrack, great character design, innovative stages and even cooperative play, but none of those factors were more important in 1991 than the soul-crushing difficulty was. As you might expect, those positive qualities are a great deal less impressive now that more than two decades have passed. The unrelenting challenge might be bearable even now if it had been confined to the game’s final moments, but the developers cranked the dial up to “ridiculous” in only the third stage. The result is a generally brilliant but frequently inaccessible game that unfortunately is difficult to recommend to any but the most determined (and perhaps masochistic) of retro gamers. It’s no wonder so many people remember that pesky speed pod stage.
Random Access (2005)
As a whole, this game has some definite good points and some DEFINITE negative aspects as well. Although some levels are absolutely delightful to play through (the first two levels are always a hoot), others will having you tearing your hair out onto the rug (resulting in unpleasant baldness) and perhaps some hardware-tossing. The difficulty level is far too high for the casual gamer; as a result, only the hardcore will find their way to the end. That's not rad.
Wizard Dojo (Aug 17, 2017)
While the challenges Battletoads throws at its players often require them to be one-hundred percent accurate, my ultimate feelings for the game are anything but.
Graphically impressive and technically refined with clever ideas and a cool overall concept, the sum of this amphibious experience is actually less than the toad parts.
Digital Press - Classic Video Games (Dec 10, 2003)
Battletoads is a game that started out with great promise but ended up in the "hopper" so to speak. If you're into raucous-raising reptiles, TMNT still seems to be the best bet, Cowabunga!
