As far as gameplay or overall gaming impact, Donkey Kong 3 contributed very little. It came out in 1984, the year of the Video Game Crash. As a result, it wasn’t nearly as popular as the first two, and those that did play it, didn’t think much of it. Still, time has been kinder to this entry than to its older brothers. Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr may have been more groundbreaking, but Donkey Kong 3 is arguably more fun.
Tilt (Dec, 1987)
I'm usually a big fan of games that were flops in the arcade and perfect translations for home consoles (see my many ColecoVision reviews of the past), but I can't get into DK3. Apparently I'm not alone, and even Nintendo knows that. Stanley, the bees, and the snake that could be a worm but is probably a squirrel haven't been seen since (I'm not counting DK Country where every possible creature in the jungle community is represented). Rest in peace, Stanley. Rest in peace.
It´s quite fun to try to get higher and higher scores, but sadly DK 3 lacks a little in the variety-department due to the limited number of different insects and the fact that the courses all look the same. Still, it´s the best of the three Donkey Kong games and quite good game on its own.

Unless you are a huge Donkey Kong fan, just get Donkey Kong Classics and call it a day. This game is a sad ending to a once mighty series and may be better left forgotten. It isn't terrible by any means, it is just boring.
NES Player (2001)
I have mixed feelings about this game. I can't seem to get very far in it because my head explodes too quickly. I don't like frustrating games, unless they are a lot fun. This game is sort of fun but not enough to make it a true classic.
Power Play (Sep, 1988)
Keine spielerische Ähnlichkeit zu den beiden Vorgängern. Erinnert fern an "Galaxian".
Unless you’re an expert player, the game’s difficulty soon squashes any semblance of fun after the first several relatively easy rounds are finished.
NES Center (2001)
Retro Game Reviews (Nov 27, 2015)
Donkey Kong 3 is almost like a mini-game that's been inexplicably released as a full fledged title. It has very little depth, barely any variety and overall it's just a massive disappointment considering how enjoyable the first two games in the series were.
Action Button Dot Net (Mar 27, 2007)
Donkey Kong 3 is the “lost” Donkey Kong game — the game that Nintendo and everyone else keeps forgetting. You never see it re-released, you never see it referenced, you never hear anyone talk about it. The reason is that it’s as much fun and about as wholesome as lighting a birthday candle on your chest and covering it with a jam jar.
The Video Game Critic (Jul 26, 2004)
Considering the genius of the first two games, it's hard to fathom that this ill-conceived dud got the green light from Nintendo. Even the graphics and sound fall flat. Donkey Kong 3 is one ill-advised game even Nintendo would like to forget.
