This combination of side-scrolling action and one-on-one fighting may not be the most refined, but the intertwining of gameplay modes offers something a little unique.

Flying Dragon is repetitive and not much fun. The control is jerky as well as the scrolling. Besides these problems, however, it is probably my favorite one-on-one kung-fu kick-em-up due to the ease of play and the way the game teaches you how to become more effective in higher rounds.

I admire Culture Brain’s attempt at something new, but this game just doesn’t measure up. If they had taken the time to hone the brawler section, while smoothing out the “tournament” portion, this game would see its rank on many a retro gamer’s “best-of” NES list. Alas, all of the secret scrolls in the world couldn’t keep me playing this game.
