If you're just after a good time, Golf will probably be enough, but if you want a no holes barred simulation you'll have to look to the Commodore or Spectrum computers. Wind variance and weather problems just aren't in this Nintendo game.

The Video Game Critic (Aug 06, 2000)
It would be easy to be critical of this relic of a golf game. You can only aim in 45 degree increments. All trees are out of bounds. The screen doesn't indicate the range of your club, or even the ball's proximity to the hole. But despite having to perform the distance calculations in your head, Golf is actually pretty fun! The swing meter is not unlike those found in modern golf games, and you can at least partially compensate for the coarse aiming controls by applying a draw or fade to your shot. Putting is tricky however, because the greens tend to be very fast. The overhead view of the hole is terrific, and the course is challenging and interesting in design. The game moves along at a brisk pace, allowing you to play 18 holes in just a few minutes. Not bad, all things considered.
Tilt (Dec, 1987)

There really isn't much more to the game than that. Though it isn't bad by any means, it’s certainly primitive and limited. If you give it a try, you’ll definitely understand why Nintendo offered NES Open Tournament Golf as a reward to early Nintendo 3DS adopters, rather than going with Golf. Today, the latter title is more a historical curiosity than anything, made only slightly more interesting by the fact that nine of its holes were later reproduced as part of the Wii Sports package. Unless that fact interests you, there’s little reason to own the cartridge today unless you’re either a true NES collector or a diehard Mario fan.
Power Play (Dec, 1987)
Retro Game Reviews (Jul 28, 2017)
Golf isn't as pick-up-and-play as other games in the genre due to its quirky controls and lack of in-game statistics. It also has none of the usual Nintendo charm or encouragement while you play, and overall it's just a really dull, soulless golf game that takes far too much time to adjust to.
The single 18-hole course features everything you’d find on a real course, such as sand-traps, trees, and water hazards. The graphics and sounds are both simplistic, and there is no music to be found throughout the game. It’s a mundane experience, even for an early NES game.

Despite the relative simplicity of Golf, other golf games that actually, you know, play like golf have come along and are far, far superior. This one can’t even summon a “nice try” golf clap.
