No Capcom or shmup fan should be without this game. My only real complaint – especially after the vastness of Guerilla War – is that the game’s too short. Six levels? The Old West was way bigger than that. No need for me to nitpick, though, especially when life could be a lot worse. Gun.Smoke is aces.
Action is fast-paced and challenging, and is complimented by a very good soundtrack, making for one of the finest and most unique NES shooters.
NES Times (Dec 28, 2007)
So all in all, Gun.Smoke is another good NES cartridge from Capcom. This game is fun and addicting with some good graphics and sounds to boot. It may not be the top dog of NES shooters, but this game is definetly one that shouldn't be run out of town. Definetly saddle up with this one.
Defunct Games (Aug 09, 2009)
Still, there's enough here to recommend the NES cartridge. I love the art style and how unforgiving the difficulty is. I love most of the bosses and the atmosphere Capcom has added to this classic game. I love the control scheme and wished that more overhead shooters would have adopted it. I like Gun.Smoke, but I still think they should have spent a few extra hours thinking up a proper (and original) name.
Zero (Feb, 1990)
For a good blast, Gun Smoke is just the tonic. It's similar in style, but obviously different from and more challenging than Commando and the action gets fast and furious very quickly. It's certainly worth a few gold nuggets from them thar hills.
A good conversion with high playability and challenging if similar levels. Worth cashing in a few nuggets for.
RetroGame Man (Nov 14, 2016)
In summary, this is a unique cowboy-themed shooter that is quite fun in the early levels but very difficult in the later levels. It introduces some unique mechanics with money and has some great music! The difficulty in the later levels and somewhat bland graphics lower its score.
Retro Game Reviews (Jul 18, 2015)
Gun.Smoke is an interesting take on the shoot-em-up genre and mixes the best bits of 1943 and Commando together (both Capcom titles by the way). The gameplay is solid and although it doesn't have much variety it has a good learning curve and enough challenge to keep you playing for a while.
