Overall, this is an Almost Classic game from Broderbound (Yes, the people who brought you the near-legendary Carmen Sandiego PC Games) that everyone should hunt down. It's a rare cart, I believe, but if you find it, it'll keep ya satisfied!

Perhaps the closest game I could link this to would be Metroid, as they share similar non-linear exploratory play-styles, but Legacy of the Wizard trumps Metroid in both size and scope. A distinct NES gem.

The game is challenging, but continuing is easy and the passwords are helpful. Exploration is the other main key, with a giant world, traps and puzzles, as well as treasure chests and shops to help the player along. Navigate the dungeons to find four bosses and get a crown from each, leading to the big showdown with Keela at the end. The game’s story has an epic quality and there is enough content and difficulty to make the overall experience feel the same.

To call Legacy of the Wizard difficult wouldn't be precise. It's tough, yes, but it's also confusing, demanding, frustrating, wonky and padded by a false sense of longevity created by its perplexing design. No, I don't consider these flaws to be elements of challenge. If games like Valdis Story: Abyssal City taught us anything, it's that 'Metroidvania' titles can be tricky without muddling their audience via overly complex structure. Legacy shouldn't have to hold your hand, and it thankfully doesn't. However, it shouldn't leave you stranded, either...
