Unlike my counterpart, I thoroughly enjoyed Metal Gear despite the extremely high difficulty level you were faced with during every moment of the game. And I’d like to stress this difficulty fact very strongly – even a seasoned gamer or someone who has played this game religiously for months can die at any instant with the greatest of ease. But that’s what makes Metal Gear such a great game. It forces you to be cautious at all times instead of running around foolishly firing your guns. There’s so much depth, strategy and stealth required from you to play this game, and until you begin to master these mechanics you will be very frustrated. The rest of the game brings me just as much joy as the challenging gameplay does. Everything from the catchy mood-setting music, superb sound effects, impressive visuals and the tacky "Engrish" translations make this game feel so "complete." I highly recommend this game.

Metal Gear Solid sur Playstation n'a certainement pas façonné la série, il l'a rendu plus cool et plus moderne, il lui a donné de la gueule, l'a truffé de rebondissements au point d'en devenir un peu comique, un robot ninja par ci, un télépathe par là, mais le gros du travail, ce sont ces jeux MSX et NES qui l'ont fait. Et cela, à lui seul, qu'on adore le jeu ou non, est un signe de qualité et de prestige. On regrettera juste que cette version pour Nintendo soit simplifiée par rapport à son modèle sur MSX2, ce qui résulte aussi en quelques maladresses. Metal Gear était un précurseur puisque quelle que soit la puissance de la console, il sert toujours de base aux jeux mettant en scène Snake. Dans notre histoire des jeux vidéo, c'est un titre qu'il faut connaître; et si vous tombez aux mains des forces ennemis, rappelez-vous, même sous la torture ne cédez pas, n'admettez rien: Metal Gear sur NES était là bien avant Metal Gear Solid, il était sprites avant d'être polygones.

Ce jeu d'arcade/aventure de Konami est passionnant. Le camp est immense et il est souhaitable d'en dresser un plan pour s'y retrouver. La réalisation est excellente, avec de bons graphismes et une animation très précise. On se prend au jeu dès la première partie et on y revient sans cesse. Du grand Konami.

Malgré le développement un peu bâclé de la version NES versus MSX, Metal Gear est un excellent jeu avec une ambiance spéciale qui récrée bien le sentiment d'être seul et d'infiltrer des bases ennemies.

Granted, certain aspects of the game haven’t aged well. Realistically, newcomers to this game might not have the patience put up with the some of its glaring blemishes. But if you can look past that, then you shouldn’t have too much trouble enjoying it. Metal Gear may not have the polish of its sequels, but you can’t help but to feel a certain fondness for it when you see all the series hallmarks that began with this one, cardboard boxes and all.

Mais tous ceux qui aiment avoir à réfléchir un minimum, seront comblés. En effet, il est indispensable d'utiliser armes et équipement à des moments et des endroits précis. Malgré tout, ce soft reste relativement facile, car une carte des passages délicats vous est fournie.
The controls take a while to get used to, especially when navigating the menus, and the graphics are misleading about what Snake can walk through to sneak around. However, this is a solid first entry in the series that defined the “stealth action” genre.

Après une première version sortie sur MSX2, Metal Gear se voit porté sur la console de Nintendo afin que les joueurs occidentaux puissent profiter du chef-d'œuvre d'Hideo Kojima. Dommage que Konami n'ait pas fait appel à lui pour réaliser cette adaptation qui a laissé de nombreuses plumes lors de son voyage depuis le Pays du Soleil Levant. En effet, pourvu d'un rendu graphique digne d'une production amateur, le soft a perdu en crédibilité pour de nombreux joueurs. Et pourtant, derrière ces affreux sprites se cachent bel et bien un jeu novateur qui met l'infiltration au premier plan. Au sein d'un monde semi-ouvert, le joueur devra se faufiler furtivement dans les entrailles de la base d'Outer Heaven pour tenter d'avorter le projet Metal Gear. Si vous parvenez à faire fi de cette réalisation de seconde zone, vous pourrez alors vous adonner à une expérience unique.
There's not much to say about tips on making it through the game. Though I can give a couple of pointers. First, you can refill your rations, ammo etc. easily by grabbing the item and then using your transceiver. The item will then reappear after you have turned off the transceiver. You can also make an appearing pit disappear by using your transceiver, but be careful, sometimes the pit may still be there even though you can't see it, and so you will die anyways. Other than that the best advise is to simply not give up, this game can be as frustrating as it is fun, but if you keep trying and work through the frustration victory will be yours!

If you play Metal Gear and then play Metal Gear Solid, it's fairly easy to tell that MGS was the game Hideo Kojima meant to make all along. He just had to wait for the technology to catch up with him. All the concepts are there in Metal Gear, and they're passable, but you'll have to play Metal Gear Solid to really see those concepts executed in a fashion worthy of their brilliance. The bottom line is this was a test run for a later, better game, and at that it was successful. Maybe Metal Gear Solid spoiled me, but if it did, it did so deservedly.
Power Play (Mar, 1990)
Ein ausgerasteter Colonel namens CaTaffy bedroht den Weltfrieden. In seinem Besitz befindet sich die größte, gefährlichste, gewaltigste und gefürchtetste Waffe dieses Planeten: "Metal Gear". CaTaffy macht Anstalten, alle Staatsoberhäupter, deren Nasen ihm nicht gefallen, in die Luft zu jagen. Damit es gar nicht erst zu solch unfreundlichen Ausschreitungen kommt, bricht ein Elite-Kämpfer zu einer Sabotage-Mission auf. Sein Codename: Solid Snake. Sein Auftrag: Metal Gear finden und zerstören.
Doch muß man nun das Programm insgesamt betrachten.Viel Neues und Interessantes tut sich dort nicht. Es wurde vielmehr auf bewährte Spielmuster zurückgegriffen. Ein Fehlgriff ist es nicht unbedingt, aber vor zu hohen Erwartungen muß man ebenfalls warnen. Gute Durchschnittsware, vielleicht eine Spur besser. Nur der Preis erscheint mir zu hoch.

I really do not like to say it; but I hate Metal Gear. I really love Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel; but I hate the original game. The control is not intuitive and it frustrates me to no end. If you really must own every game in a series than it is worth the price for that reason alone. This game is seriously only for those who are way more patient than I am.

Perhaps my biggest annoyance with this game, though, is that no matter how far you get, you only have one life, and when you die, you always have to start at the very beginning of the game. Yes, you’ll have all the items and weapons and key cards you’ve collected thus far, but still. There’s no reason for such a design choice, and it only increases the amount of time you need to play this long and tedious game. And, let’s face it, you’ll need that extra time perfecting the ultimate gravelly Snake voice! Metal Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaarrrrrrrrggghhh! But even if you don’t want to do that, Metal Gear still isn’t fun.

If you can go into this game with the knowledge that it’s a flawed version of the original game from the outset, it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. However, that takes a lot of work on the part of the player, and you might be better off tracking down the actual MSX version of the game, which has been released in various Metal Gear Solid collections over the years. This is a curious piece of history, but a lot of patience is required to get anything meaningful out of it and, as such, I would recommend it only to hardcore fans of the series.

Metal Gear is a dreadful stealth-action game and either the developers intentionally set out to punish players by sending them on wild goose chases or the project wasn't properly planned from the outset. The level design and gameplay are lacking in quality and overall it's an exercise in pure frustration.
The Video Game Critic (Feb 21, 2005)
Poorly translated dialogue results in grammatically incoherent lines like "I feel asleep!" and "Attempt to contact missing our Gray Fox". There are plenty of supply trucks to investigate, but half of them automatically transport you to a different area ("Uh Oh, the truck have started to move!"). Cheap hits (including trap doors) will frustrate you to no end and send you back to the jungle where you started. I will give the game credit for is its intense, pulse-pounding musical score. It's truly mpressive for the NES. In the final analysis, Metal Gear did a fair job of establishing some original concepts that would define the series in years to come, but only nostalgic gamers will want to relive this tedious adventure. A sequel by the name of "Snake's Revenge" also appeared on the NES.
Metal Gear shows much promise for future Ultra Games entries. It attempts to move beyond the standard run/jump/shoot format favored by the vast majority of NES software publishers. It also exploits the desire of the player to acquire newer, deadlier technology through the course of a game. These strengths combine to make Metal Gear a potential superhit that, unfortunately, is sabotaged by its own weaknesses.
