Consoles Plus (Sep, 1991)

All Game Guide (2007)
Lack of replay value aside, I honestly believe this to be one of the greatest titles ever released on the NES. It's definitely worth a try. Just don't say I didn't warn you if, for a few days, everything else in your life is secondary to your trip through that spooky castle.

Nintendojo (1999)
Shadowgate is an extremely addictive title. If youâre stuck, you want to just search every nook and cranny until you can enter a new room or gain a new item. It can be frustrating at times, but difficulty is a good trait in an adventure title. Thankfully, it isnât uber difficult and a veteran player can whiz through it in a matter of hours. The title was so successful, Kemco released a sequel on the Nintendo 64 entitled Shadowgate 64: The Trials of the Four Towers a good 10 years after the initial release and even a redux on the Game Boy Color as Shadowgate Classic.

Shadowgate is an excellent game that will help you exercise your masochistic side. As you will keep coming back in an effort to figure out how to âbeat this room.â Few games have a player stumble as hard or as often. Also, this game is far from linear. While there is a soft sequence that must be followed to beat the game, you are free to explore the rooms youâve successfully accessed at your leisure. Make sure you have plenty of time if youâre sitting down to Shadowgate for the first time.

If you can roll with the often-frustrating trial-and-error gameplay, thereâs a lot to appreciate in Shadowgate. Eerie atmosphere, haunting music, and great writing really envelop you within the castleâs walls. NES ports of PC or Mac games usually stumble in their execution, but ICOMâs ports always look, sound, and feel fantastic. Put down Call of Duty and dust off your thinking cap: Shadowgate will stick a poker in your cerebrum.

If you're the sort of person who only has the tolerance for inane beat-'em-ups and vacant shoot-'em-ups then pass on this one. Shadowgate is for anyone who liked Dungeon Master. This is a thinker's game that doesn't cloud its strategy with stupid "action" stages. At 40 quid Shadowgate isn't cheap, but for months of taxing gameplay it is well worth it.

Shadowgate is an excellent port of the Macintosh classic and an underrated gem in the NES library. There is actually a decent selection of adventure titles on the system and Shadowgate is one of the best.

Shadowgate was Kemco's biggest NES puzzler, mixing a corny plot with challenging puzzles, confusing riddles, creativity-inspiring item collection, and a musical composition that holds it all together. If any NES game worked in this day and age, I would recommend all of you puzzle freaks out there to buy it.

Total!! UK Magazine (Feb, 1992)
It's all just a bit disappointing really. The graphics aren't all that bad, but the scenery is ruined by some laughable animation. The sound could have been better too. But the major downer is the sudden death. Again. And again. Poor game design makes Shadowgate a bit of a dead loss.

While the base of the game is solid, and the fantasy
world it builds is intriguing, the end result just grates a bit too much
on the nerves to be consistently fun.

The Video Game Critic (Oct 28, 2014)
Shadowgate may be tough but it doesn't stand a chance against a gamer armed with an FAQ! With Brent at the controls and Chris directing, I watched them complete the game in about an hour and a half. It's amazing how cryptic some of the puzzles are. Open a bucket? Use a torch to light a carpet on fire?! Who would have thought of this stuff?! The funny thing is, they still had a good time rated it a solid C. I'm not so generous, but Shadowgate has a certain Halloween charm that's hard to deny.

Mean Machines (Aug, 1991)
I don't mind RPGs or adventures if they're any good, but Shadowgate is just plain boring and very, very, very frustrating. It takes an age just to move the pointer anywhere! Also the interaction with the game is limited to the commands at the bottom of the screen, which makes some of the solutions to the puzzles rather obscure and a tad bizarre too, like opening a skull to find a key (????). Open doors? Yes I can see that. Opening a skull, I don't think so, somehow. The graphics and sound are pretty dull too - in fact some of the music is hopelessly out of tune! Also, the amount of times the player kicks the bucket in a sudden death situation makes frustration set in almost immediately. Deranged adventure buffs may get some satisfaction out of this product, but after a few minutes of play, and about seventeen different kinds of gross and hideous deaths I didn't want to touch the cart again.
