Retroage (Dec 20, 2014)
NES Times (Jan 09, 2006)
Even with its okay graphics and sub-par sounds, Slalom still manages to be a great early title. With its fun and challenging gameplay Slalom is one of those games that's easy to just pick up and start playing every now and again. Rare certainly got its legacy off on the right foot with this overlooked gem.

If you fail to make it to the finish line before your time ends, your slalom-ing days are numbered and it’s back to the practice courses with you. Another player can join in the wintery wonderland excitement, but you have to take turns. One assumes that you only have one pair of skis, and anyways, the slalom can barely handle one inflated ego.
Controls are fine, with just the right amount of “slippage” you’d expect from traveling on snow. As the courses progress and more obstacles and other skiers inhabit the course, it can get pretty hectic to make the course time. It’s a nice and challenging game, if a little bit simplistic.
Power Play (Feb, 1988)
Wizard Dojo (Aug 08, 2017)
The simple gameplay of going downhill and avoiding obstacles is a lot more fun than it may sound, and the game has a fun sense of humor by peppering the stages with obstacles like snowmen and kids playing in the snow. And, for an NES game, Slalom has surprisingly strong visuals, with the levels moving in such a way as to bring to mind SNES titles like F-Zero and Super Mario Kart. It may be simple stuff, but Slalom provides some good, challenging, 8-bit fun.
The Video Game Critic (Feb 25, 2009)
The distant scenery looks nice with the purple mountains superimposed over a deep blue sky. It looks like you're skiing at night! Unfortunately, the trail itself looks like a white road on a gray landscape. I guess the programmers wanted to clearly delineate the trail, but it makes Slalom look like a car racing game! The controls are squirrelly and lack the precision required to comfortably weave between the gates. It's not great, but Slalom still makes for a good seasonal game to play on a cold winters' night.
Retro Game Reviews (Jul 21, 2015)
Slalom is a game that I thought I'd love but the difficulty is so unbalanced that it's frustrating rather than a fun challenge. The simple premise is excellent but it's poorly executed and once the CPU opponents join the party any brief enjoyment just flies out the window!
Youngsters may enjoy this game for its simple concept, but it offers little in the way of fun for anyone else.
