Another good thing about Top Gun is you can just pick it up and start to play. Getting Migs in your sight blasting them with your cannon or even locking missiles onto them. At this level you can start enjoying the game seconds after you plug in. An excellent flight game addition to the Nintendo library of games.
Top Gun is visually sparse, but the enemy sprites are extremely effective - especially in the air-to-air combat. Combined with decent sound effects and the varied and entertaining action, this latest Konami release is bound to appeal to all shoot-em-up addicts.
Despite these negatives, though, Top Gun is in many ways a classic. It's fairly common, and you shouldn't have any problem finding it for more than four or five bucks. If you're in the mood for some good flight simulation 8-bit style, it's definitely worth picking up.
This is definitely not a simulation, but more a fast arcade-style experience that may frustrate, but also provide some dogfighting thrills.

On s'y croirait !

Top Gun’s biggest flaw is that it features only four levels. As was the way back then, those levels are ruthless to compensate. Making it through all four on only three lives, plus refueling and carrier landing minigames, and without “cheating” by pointing at the sky, is a challenge indeed. Whether you want such a classic NES challenge is what’s going to determine the value here.
As in many Nintendo games, the emphasis is on playability rather than graphic presentation. On this level Top Gun succeeds as it provides four limited, but very playable missions with extra features - landing, refuelling and a missile strategy - to spruce up the action.

Top Gun does a few things well but it's too short with little variety and comes across as more of a tech demo. In reality, once you've beaten the second mission you've really seen everything it has to offer so there's no reason to keep playing other than for completions sake.

The landing sequence is unforgiving, but it’s also the most interesting portion of an otherwise forgettable flight sim. Save your breath (away) for a better game. Top Gun‘s all business, no party.
Power Play (May, 1988)

As a whole, Top Gun on NES is a fine piece of nostalgia that can provide short bursts of fun. But the dogfights will certainly feel shallow by today’s standards, and the carrier landing segments just don’t make sense. Top Gun isn’t a bad game by default, but it is a poorly-aged title.
