GameCube64 Power / big.N / N Games (Jun, 2004)

The folks at Midway might have bitten off more than they could chew this year with NFL Blitz Pro. The result is a schizophrenic title that can't really decided what it wants to be. It's still a fun and different take on the sport of football -- especially as a multiplayer party game -- it's just not as much fun as it used to be. And, as a sim-style contest, it can't compare to the offerings from EA or Sega. Let's hope someone tweaks the real-surreal balance in next year's game.

Midway made an ambitious move in introducing a lot of sim elements into its farcical Blitz game. NFL Blitz Pro, as a result, comes across as a slightly schizophrenic brew. The true-to-the-sport side won't please the football gamers used to deeper titles from EA or Sega, and those who just like the idea of flagrant late hits might be disappointed that some of the lunacy seems to have been toned down. Rent this one before trading in your copy of Blitz 20-03.
