Description

Xanadu Next is an entry in the Xanadu series of action RPGs. It casts you as a young adventurer recently arrived to the outskirts of the abandoned kingdom of Xanadu, there you hope to raid the dungeons and make a name for yourself, however you get tricked early on and now a curse lays over your head, turning your quest for adventure into one for survival.

The game is played from a mouse-driven third-person perspective from which you issue orders to your character. Gameplay consists of the usual dungeon crawling and leveling up, with some added puzzle solving sequences and lots of boss battles to overcome. You can find unique items all over the world and trade them at the local shop back in town, as well as find ancient treasures, buy unique "cards" that grant your character special abilities and learn the lore of the long-forgotten Xanadu.

It's literally a mix of Diablo + Dark Souls 1

The Good
Atmosphere is godlike, almost reaches Souls games. Level design is also godlike, no level is made procedurally (even though it is perfect for this genre).

Combat is ok, it's a miracle it is fun, considering it is point-and-click.
Story is ok, not so bad you don't care at all, not so good it hooks you.

Endgame dungeon is made fully procedurally, and lasts as long as the entire fucking game from start to killing final boss. It is hardcore too. Find me a game where the endgame lasts as much as the main game.

The Bad
Aside from some QoL stuff, the main issue with the game is the key system. It is the most retarded system to touch this genre. Imagine any dungeon crawler or roguelike, but every room is locked, so to move to the next room you need a key. So imagine being at full HP, exploring a beautiful castle, and the next room needs a key, so you have to teleport back to the city.

How you get keys?
By buying them in a shop -_-
Or if you are lucky, very few drop from monsters.
So, most of your gold goes to keys, and you will eventually be locked away and have no money to progress, this invites grind...

So if you read this, and intend to play this, just slap cheat engine 999999 gold, buy all the keys in the game, then 0 your gold. The economy is still balanced, since even paying 0 for keys, you will still often run out of money (consumable items + equipment always getting more expensive).

If you play with the default key system, you will probably hate the game, as this negative is enough to trash all the good things in this game.

The Bottom Line
Full of soul. Forgotten and overshadowed by Diablo clones because it was made by random Koreans with 0 marketing push lul

tl;dr: Play if you want to play a mix of Diablo and Dark Souls.
