At the end of the day, the Giana Sisters may be a Mario Bros clone but it has enough differences to stand on its own merits that we strongly believe. Although no multiplayer modes, the game does have one very big bonus to players who have completed the game and if you manage to finish the game without losing any lives, it unlocks the original game, The Great Giana Sisters to play. And yes, this was way too difficult for us to do but we had fun trying though. Definitely a game recommended to lovers or classic arcade fun!

The Germans and the Japanese have reconciled their differences, and this new Axis of Awesome has brought Giana Sisters to the most popular game system on the planet. 80s veterans will be relieved to know that this remake is every bit as good as the original, and brings fresh innovation to a beloved classic. As for everyone else, all you need to know is that this is one of the best DS games money can buy.
Nintendo Life (Aug 03, 2010)
Giana Sisters DS might not have an original bone in its body, but what it does have is over 80 levels of enjoyable and challenging platforming action. The toned down difficulty in earlier levels might prove to be a bit of a pushover for seasoned fans of the genre, but those willing to stick it with it will be aptly rewarded with some extremely challenging levels later on in the game. Given the game's rarity and fairly heft price tag, it's obviously not going to be worth it for everyone, but for those who just can't seem to get enough platforming goodness, it might be worth the trouble to track this little gem down.

The truth is we absolutely loved our time with Giana Sisters DS. Sure, it’s simple in the gameplay department, but in this time of HD visuals and next-gen consoles, we should all remember that the simple things are often the best. Giana Sisters DS truly shines, as one of the most entertaining platformers we’ve ever played!

Like the recently released Shadow Complex, Giana Sisters DS shows that you can't judge a game by its simple gameplay mechanic. While easy to pick up, Giana Sisters proves complex to master; showing that there is nothing shallow in these gameplay waters - and proving that there is plenty of entertainment left in the platforming genre yet.

Worth Playing (Feb 12, 2012)
Giana Sisters DS is a game full of surprises. It first surprises with design competence in the face of its greatest competitor; it then continues to surprise with its charm, and flourishes with its soundtrack. It doesn't quite feel like something that can topple the big-name platforming icons yet; Mario, Kirby, Sonic, Meat Boy, etc., are hardly in trouble at the moment. However, this is a more than solid start, and if Giana can build on it in future games, she will absolutely be a new contender. It's not bad for a game that started as a literal pretender.

I suppose if you were a C64 child, Giana Sisters DS is your homecoming. For everyone else, it's about as average as you can imagine a game could be. It's no mystery why Nintendo no longer feels threatened by this shameless pretender.
