If you enjoyed Birth By Sleep, then pick up Re:Coded. Both games have a similar combat system, so Re:Coded will feel familiar to gamers. If you liked the original Kingdom Hearts, definitely pick up Re:Coded. Gamers will enjoy the similiarities between Re:Coded and the original game (location, music and characters) and enjoy that the game is portable. However, while gamers will enjoy the many similarities there are between the two games, there's enough new features in Re:Coded for gamers to enjoy.

While Re:coded never does anything that's particularly groundbreaking, it does what it sets out to do very well and adds some fun and interesting twists on the standard formula. As enjoyable as it is, however, I hope this is the last time Kingdom Hearts revisits the same levels again -- I'm ready to stop rehashing the past and find out what's next.

Look, if you're sick of Kingdom Hearts filler games, I don't blame you. But Kingdom Hearts Re:coded may actually get you back in the spirit. The game feels like classic Kingdom Hearts, and it stars all the characters that made me like the first game. I had fun the entire time because the game kept giving me something new to do. The story is pretty meh, up until the end when you get sneak peeks into what the next two games will be about. And hell, getting jazzed for the next installment may be reason enough to purchase this.

The point is, the Kingdom Hearts series needs fresh content, and it needs it now. Re:Coded is an enjoyable game, but one that is tiresomely familiar, even to an avid fan of the series. Above all else, it shows more clearly than ever that Square Enix is coming dangerously close to damaging the integrity of this franchise with the number of spin-offs. The gameplay is fun, if flawed, and prevents the experience from being a total bust, but beyond that, this Kingdom Hearts has little to offer.
Game Over Online (Mar 21, 2011)
Kingdom Hearts Re:coded is a game that feels fragmented. It failed to live up to its potential when it comes to treading new ground, as it falls back into the same familiar territory that fans have already visited and seen. It is not a bad game by any means, but this latest Kingdom Hearts game just isn’t what it could have been in regards to giving the series a boost and the breath of fresh air that it needed.

Do yourself a favor and wait until this game hits a major price drop. Honestly, I've never felt so let down by a Kingdom Hearts game. As fans of the series, we all deserve better than this.
GameSpot (Jan 11, 2011)
Despite this, at about 25 hours, it feels like this game takes an awfully long time to tell a short and shallow story. The punch picks up at the very end, but the majority of it feels like a slow retread of old territory without much new information to impart [...] Kingdom Hearts Re:coded hits all the typical notes, but much like the reused musical themes that stud this adventure, you've heard this song before. While some of the new gameplay features are fun to splash around in, this game suffers from its pacing and cranky camera, even as it shows glimmers of the true spirit of the series. Sora and friends are not in their finest form, but fans can glean what they will from the notes in Jiminy's journal.

As a kid, I watched as new editions of Street Fighter II kept coming out, and all I wanted was for Capcom to finally announce Street Fighter III. I imagine that fans of the Kingdom Hearts series are feeling quite similar here. Re:coded is a predominantly faithful recreation of the first game, with enough variance thrown in to keep series diehards satisfied. Unfortunately though, the new additions to the formula have made the game over complicated and confusing. If you're desperately looking for a new(ish) Kingdom Hearts adventure, check out Re:coded, otherwise, avoid buying the same game twice.

Camera and pacing issues aside, there are few real flaws, but equally there's very little you'll remember once the credits have rolled on the 15-hour campaign. While Birth By Sleep pointed a potential way forward for the series, Re:coded is a disappointing step back. The unshakeable sense of overfamiliarity won't trouble newcomers, but anyone who witnessed that first glorious collision of the worlds of Disney and Square will surely think that Re:hash is a more appropriate title.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Feb 17, 2011)
