Just as in the rest of the gaming world, Madden NFL 06 is the only choice for DS owners with a football hankering. If you've been eagerly awaiting a franchise mode for the DS Madden series, you'll be pleased to note it's here in 06, along with another structurally sound game of football and some DS-only features that should hold marginal interest for most players. If, on the other hand, you're looking for something remarkably different from last year's game, you likely won't find it here.

It's odd to think this way, but this portable version has improved itself better than the console games. Everything has been cleaned up, fixed, and toyed with. The results are a staggering improvement. This isn't a replacement for those obsessed any of the home console versions of Madden '06, but a nice diversion when you can't get a fix on the road.
Uglier than a 400-pound lineman, this game is a total mess from top to bottom. The introduction of Franchise mode does little to alleviate the gameplay pain.

Madden NFL 06 is a step in the right direction when it comes to value-added features, but the in-game action is woefully inadequate when compared to its console counterparts. Instead of trying to recreate the console experience, the developers would be better off designing a game from scratch to take better advantage of the system’s dual screens and interactive features. Unless you absolutely have to have football on the go, it’s best to follow cover star Donovan McNabb’s lead: pass and enjoy a nice bowl of soup instead. Mama will be proud.
