Gaming Age (2007)
Picross DS has me captivated. Ever since I received it I can't put it down. I've played it every night before bed. It features a Daily Picross mode that keeps track of my progress on a chart, similar to Planet Puzzle League and Brain Age. The game supports the Rumble Pak, but it's a trivial option and I can take it or leave it. Some gamers will surely like the added interaction though. Puzzle freaks, hardcore gamers, and casuals alike should definitely give Picross DS a try. It will keep you occupied for a long time and it has that magical I'll just play one more level quality to it that so few games possess. Plus it's only $19.99. You simply can't go wrong.
Picross DS astounds as one of the most fully featured DS titles on the shelves. There’s brilliant touchscreen use, hundreds upon hundreds of puzzles that will drain hours of your life, the ability to create your own puzzles, local single and multi-card wireless trading and competition, as well as a vibrant, constantly evolving online community, online puzzle trading, international ranking and online battles. Seriously, you couldn’t ask for much more. The aesthetics of the sound and graphics might be a little raw, but when you finally put this game down at one in the morning, you’ll be squinting so much you won’t even notice. Best yet, you can find it for thirty bucks. If you’ve ever liked a puzzle game of this sort, do yourself a favour and pick this one up.
Like Sudoku or crossword puzzles, this is one of those endlessly replayable games. The solution is always there, right in front of you. It's just a matter of using logic and careful planning to place the block correctly. In addition the brilliant main modes, you can also design your own Picross boards to share with friends, play online against four other competitors or download grids from the original Game Boy cartridge. That's a lot of gameplay for a great bargain of $20, making this one of the best handheld games of the year, hands down.

I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised with Picross DS. It ranks up there with the system’s elite in terms of “pick up and play” gameplay. With so much content and such a great price, you’d be a fool not to add this to your DS library.
411mania.com (Aug 27, 2007)
There are a couple of faults but they’re easily overlooked, if you don’t like logic puzzle games though you won’t like this. It takes time and effort to complete the harder level puzzles but it’s a very worthwhile experience to get there. Easily the best puzzle game on the DS but the lack of flash will probably put people off. Look past that though, and you couldn’t get a better time eating experience.
1UP (Jul 31, 2007)
Inevitable immaturity aside, Picross is an exceptional puzzle game with a no-nonsense presentation. It's especially great to see it in America at long last, a decade's worth of entries having been Japanese exclusives. Picross is a creative exercise in math and logic, and even people whose left brains have atrophied over the years will love it.
GameZone (Oct 01, 2007)
This is Picross at its finest. If you are looking for something to keep you busy for those long bus rides or even while relaxing at home, Picross DS offers nearly endless, addictive gameplay, and with a $20 price tag you can’t go wrong.
This review might seem a tad short for a game with so much content. The fact of the matter is it is very difficult to review a game with nearly no graphical interface, no stirring soundtrack, and no characters to speak of. Picross DS is quite literally you, a grid, some numbers, and the seemingly endless combinations of them. If you have $20 and a DS, Picross DS should be at the top of your shopping list. Games that sell for three times Picross DS's price don't have this much entertainment in them. So the next time you fall into the "Gee, I wish I had a new game to play" funk, Picross DS will be there to brighten your spirits, especially through the tail end of this summer game drought.
Yahoo! Games (Jul 30, 2007)
With most puzzle games, you often get the feeling you're playing an endless, fruitless time sink. In Picross DS, you get a real sense of accomplishment, while still being just as enthralled as with the Tetrises and Meteoses of the world. It rewards intelligence over reflexes, broadening its target audience immensely. Play it for 10 minutes, or five hours; either way, you'll have a smile on your face the entire time. Picross DS comes surprisingly close to being the perfect brain-teaser. Don't pass it up.
Thunderbolt Games (Jul 19, 2007)
One of my colleagues here on Thunderbolt said it absolutely best: “Picross is a very good NON-GAME.” Picross DS isn’t really a traditional video game. Despite this, if you like puzzle games, Picross DS is one of the best non-games you can pick up. It probably won’t appeal to younger kids or action junkies, but fans of puzzle games can’t afford to miss this. While the included puzzles are incredibly challenging and time-consuming, the included editor and the ability to download new puzzles means that this game is going to have a long shelf-life. While it may be difficult to describe why it’s so good, Picross DS is a top-notch puzzle game that will almost instantly get you hooked.
GameSpy (Jul 31, 2007)
There's an awful lot to do in Picross DS, but given the addictive nature of the puzzles, don't be surprised if you plow though the puzzles in a couple of weeks. The downloadable puzzles and custom puzzles will keep you busy for a while longer, but the fact is, you'll want more. Hopefully more will people catch on to picross this time around, so we'll see a lot more of these titles in the future.
Jeuxvideo.fr (Jun 07, 2007)
Assez simple visuellement parlant, Picross DS devient rapidement addictif.
IGN (Jul 31, 2007)
The game may not look like much on the surface, but once you delve into a handful of Picross puzzles you might find it hard to stop playing. Picross DS is a brilliant, mature-focused Nintendo DS product that's incredibly addictive with near endless gameplay. If you missed out on the original Game Boy design Nintendo's got you covered: those puzzles can be downloaded off of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers for free. This is a fantastic alternative to the Sudoku design, and as fun as that number puzzle is, Picross DS trounces it.
Picross may not have the variety of some current puzzle compilations which offer more quantity like Brain Buster Puzzle Pak, but Sudoku et al. fans should not miss this title.
Nintendo Vision (Jun 05, 2007)
IGN UK (May 18, 2007)
As far as complaints go though, that's it - although it's perhaps fair to say you might want to turn the repetitive music off sooner rather than later. With the arrival of Picross DS, Nintendo's produced yet another practically faultless, top quality puzzler for its unstoppable handheld. Sure, with its minimalist visual styling and paper-based heritage, it's definitely one aimed at the growing army of 'casual' gamers. Don't let that put you off though - Picross DS is simply one of the most addictive, feature-packed timewasters out there. Your journeys into work might never be the same again.
IGN Australia (Jun 06, 2007)
Picross DS may not leap out of the screen to gouge your eyes out with its sheer visual brilliance – in fact, quite the opposite - but honestly, what does it matter with such compelling gameplay? And trust us – it really is compelling. While the styles of challenges available may not vary all that much, if you’re a fan of any of the other great puzzle games available on DS – the likes of Meteos, Tetris DS, Siltherlink and Planet Puzzle League, you’d do well to check this one out.
Wham! gaming (Aug 22, 2007)
The Nintendo DS seems to have found a comfortable niche with a variety of puzzle games to help already busy people pass the time even more quickly. "Picross" is an elegant, alluring option that will keep you coming back for more.
Gamebrink (2007)
With the fairly large number of puzzles that come with Picross DS, the game will keep you occupied for quite some time. But with the addition of Wi-Fi features, you could find yourself picking up the game very often even after completing all puzzles. I don’t know how long Nintendo is planning to release weekly puzzles for but at the time of writing this, Nintendo is holding the very first Picross event via Wi-Fi accepting puzzle submissions with a “spring theme”. Selected puzzles are going to appear in future downloads so I presume the service will still continue for a while to come. In the meantime, both puzzle and Picross fans will still have plenty to enjoy – especially Wi-Fi versus mode.
Jeuxvideo.com (May 14, 2007)
Deeko (Aug 05, 2007)
All in all, Picross DS is a title that you need to play. Yes, I said "need". Of the many puzzles games currently available, this is one of the most inventive and imaginative, offering up a tiny reward each and every time you solve a puzzle. While the award might be a crappy 2D animated gif, it's still pretty sweet and you'll want to solve puzzles over and over again, just to see what the next picture is. The visuals and sound may be lacking, but the overall package is one of pure puzzle gaming bliss.
Game Shark (Aug 15, 2007)
"Easy to pick up but hard to put down” has become a trite phrase but it fits Picross DS perfectly. It’s hard to believe that such a fun and puzzle packed game only costs 20 bucks, especially when many “next gen” games clock in at three times the price with barely as much content. Fans of logic puzzles as well as those looking for a fun diversion will be well served by giving Picross DS a try.
Fragland.net (May 23, 2007)
In the end, Picross DS is a more than decent title. The puzzles demand a little thinking in the beginning but they are really fun. Soon you'll find yourself grabbing your DS right before school or work, between two bites of a sandwich, in the train, on the loo, during the loading-times of another game, in your bed, and so on. Of course you can play a free internet version, but the portability of this game really is a big fat plus, as is the price; Picross DS is in stores for just under 30 euros. I suggest you try one of the free versions and if you like it; just buy the game.
Games TM (Apr, 2007)
If you're not remotely interested in logic brainteasers, then Picross DS is unlikely to change your ind. But Nintendo's effort is the most complete version yet of this fearsomely addictive pastime - devotees of the genre would well be in puzzle heaven here.
Gameblog.fr (Jun 11, 2007)
Consoles Plus (May, 2007)
GameSpot (Jul 31, 2007)
By offering a ton of puzzles to play alone and the constant challenge of online play, Picross DS is a long-lasting puzzle game and an awesome value at $19.99. If you're already a fan of logic puzzles like Sudoku, this might just be your next brain-teasing habit.
Gaming since 198x (Nov 06, 2007)
Picross is indeed a very simple game at heart. However, like many puzzlers it offers entertainment in its purest, most elemental form. If you love puzzles games or simply want a DS game that you can keep on you at all times, you need to check out Picross DS. You won’t be disappointed.
EL33TONLINE (May 23, 2008)
Picross DS is a simple, straightforward puzzle game based on a fairly mature concept, but its interface, options and sheer volume of puzzles (as well as the limitless possibilities of the Internet) means that it is a must-have title for puzzle game fans. Of course, those who balk at Sudoku or crossword puzzles should remain wary as always, and maybe try out a pen and paper version before choosing this to while away idle hours instead of Mario Kart.
NintendoWorldReport (Jul 31, 2007)
Overall, Picross DS is a good little package. Competitive play just doesn't work as well as it does for some other puzzle games, but it can still be fun in short spurts. If you like pick up and play puzzle games on your DS, that's sufficient reason to pick up Picross. It will go nicely in your case next to Planet Puzzle League, Tetris, and Brain Age.
Gamestyle (Aug 06, 2007)
So, it’s not the most exciting game on the DS, but it will hold your attention for some time. There are plenty of puzzles available from the outset, a daily challenge mode (in a similar vein to Brain Training) and the aforementioned editor and wi-fi connection. Picross can entertain you for five minutes or make you lose an entire afternoon. It’s easily accessible, frustratingly annoying at times, and also quite relaxing. There’s little that can be added here, and, at a £20 price tag is worth a purchase if you’re into puzzlers. Picross DS is yet another fine example of what “Touch Generations” is all about, and is a great addition to the series.
Pocket Gamer UK (Jun 14, 2007)
Despite its rather abstract styling and a limited music palette that you'll probably turn off before too long so you can concentrate on the job in hand, overall Picross DS is a highly accomplished piece of DS entertainment. It's not slick or flashy, but as long as you're prepared to make the initial introduction, it will certainly provide long-term companionship.
Cubed3 (Jun 07, 2007)
An extraordinary title, and one of the best puzzle games on the DS. The cartridge just oozes with content, and is great as a casual game for logical fun between playing other DS games. If you're looking for a head-scratcher, look no further.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Apr 09, 2007)
It is, simply, just about the best version of just about the best logic puzzle out there. So here's hoping that the onslaught of Sudoku and the success of titles like Brain Training will have paved the way for a western release. And that Nintendo can provide us all with a few more hours in the day.
FOK!games (May 31, 2007)
Game Revolution (Aug 13, 2007)
For something that belongs in your 'Games' folder between Minesweeper and Freecell, Picross DS is a quaint title that makes its number on engrossing gameplay. Though most of its bells and whistles do not hold up to scrutiny very well, the simplicity and depth of the main modes will keep you occupied with more than two hundred unlockable puzzles. There is not much of a difference between getting Picross DS and just a plain ol' book of Picross puzzles, but not having to lug around a fist-sized eraser (because you're going to need one) is more than enough reason to be grateful for its digital rebirth. May you be oddly fulfilled for weeks to come.
Consoles Plus (Mar, 2007)
GamePro (US) (Aug 27, 2007)
This one is strictly for diehard puzzle fans and gamers who find the number-juggling of Sudoku to be too challenging or boring. It's a good little title that's enjoyable but ultimately of limited appeal.
videogamer.com (May 24, 2007)
Despite this, Picross is a great little puzzle game that certainly makes a change from doing Sudoku on a crumpled up paper. It won't last forever, and it has its faults, but if you've ever got addicted to Minesweeper you'll likely enjoy this curious puzzle game.
Video Game Talk (Aug 04, 2007)
Picross DS is a simple but addicting game. While it's not much for fancy graphics or catchy sounds, Nintendo did make it a lot more replayable by connecting it to their Wi-Fi connection, and by adding a create your own puzzle feature. Although it does have a few issues with the touchpad controls, Picross DS is still one of the better pick up and play games available on the system. Recommended.
Gamer.nl (May 15, 2007)
G4 TV: X-Play (Oct 05, 2007)
It may not look like a lot of fun, but the methodical gameplay is rock solid.
