Perfect for puzzle lovers who like a reason to put their brains through mental calisthenics. With a fun mystery theme and gorgeous hand-drawn graphics, this game makes it fun to solve challenging brainteasers.
Nintendo continues its mission to enhance the brains of the nation with more cartoon puzzles from Prof Layton!
Game Couch (Jan 20, 2010)
Even if this game were a retread of Curious Village, I would have no problem recommending it, but Level-5 has added some fun new features. Apprentice Luke creates a sandbox obstacle course for his overweight hamster. Professor Layton brews tea for picky villagers. Building a camera leads to spot-the-difference camera puzzles.
Jeuxvideo.fr (Sep 23, 2009)

I understand that my passion for this methodical, brain-bending style of game isn't universal. But I love books, and Diabolical Box turns my DS into a book of puzzles -- a book I can pick up and peruse at my leisure, or close and think about when I come across a particularly vexing conundrum. Level-5 could've been lazy and offered up the exact same formula as the Curious Village, thrown in some new puzzles, and I still would have received the game with open, enthusiastic arms. But Diabolical Box shows that the game's developers aren't content to just sit on their laurels -- they take a wonderful game, and make it even better.
NintendoWorldReport (Aug 22, 2009)
Overall, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is a spectacular sequel. It retains the wonderful and challenging puzzles from the original while offering grander story. There's a wealth of content, with over 150 puzzles and three different mini-games. It's a very unique type of game, and anyone who enjoys a good puzzle will most definitely enjoy this fantastic title.
Our worry was that Professor Layton And Pandora's Box would be a third-rate sequel attempting to cash in on the success of the original. Thankfully we can say that's not the case: if you didn't rate the original, steer well clear, but if you enjoyed Curious Village this is pretty much more of the same and should charm and enthral you just like the original did. Why can't all sequels do this?
Gamona (Oct 07, 2009)
Computer Bild Spiele (Sep 11, 2009)
RPGFan (Sep 13, 2009)
Level-5 changed just enough in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box to keep the sequel fresh while maintaining the highlights of The Curious Village: excellent puzzles, beautiful art, appropriate music, a fun story, and a sense of whimsy. With the additions – multiple locations, story relevant puzzles, and improved minigames – The Diabolical Box might just surpass the original. Hopefully Professor Layton’s other adventures will reach U.S. shores. Not only will we receive more great games, but we might also discover the key to the mystery everyone’s dying to solve: what’s under that hat?
GameSpy (Aug 25, 2009)
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is like a puzzle book that you'd pick up in the magazine section of your favorite book store, only with videogame accoutrements thrown on top of it. The result is something far more interactive -- and, more importantly, far more entertaining -- than any puzzle book could ever be. Not only do puzzle enthusiasts get over 130 downright mind-boggling brainteasers, but they also get a host of interesting characters to meet and environments to explore, as well as a new storyline that brings cohesion to what would otherwise be a mere digitized textbook of logic puzzles.
Thunderbolt Games (Sep 16, 2009)
It’s got everything you’d ever want from a text-based adventure. The story, while having a few predictable twists, is superbly told and entertaining. It’s the puzzles that steal the show, though. The sheer amount, variety, and difficulty level of the challenges tests your analytical and critical thinking skills. Considering all the extra content you can get, figuring everything out is well worth the effort. Between the bonus puzzles, unlockables, and other features, you’re going to have your hands full. Finding some of the stuff might be a little too tedious, though; the random NPC encounters can prove frustrating when you’re trying to uncover another puzzle. The well-crafted presentation makes up for it; between the awesome cutscenes and the soundtrack, you’ll be too distracted to notice any flaws. No, the game is not perfect. Nor is it for everyone. But it’s worth trying. Professor Layton is back, and he’s never looked better.
HEXUS.gaming (Sep 10, 2009)
If puzzles turn you on, you won’t find a hand-held game more addictive than Professor Layton & Pandora’s Box. This is puzzling at its very best, the ideal companion on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is a great sequel that carries with it all the elements that made the original such a phenomenal success. Essential for those looking for a challenge of the mental type.
Game Freaks 365 (Sep 28, 2009)
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. Whether it is the presentation, the voice acting, the new puzzles each week or the puzzles themselves, Professor Layton is a high quality product that keeps you thinking throughout the entire experience. If you happened to enjoy its predecessor, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, you are sure to love the Diabolical Box. With two more unreleased games on the way, I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
Fragland.net (Nov 06, 2009)
It's not a difficult assignment to puzzle together a conclusion. Just like its predecessor this game is beautifully put together, you get tons of fun and varied puzzles and a funny story to keep everything together. Those looking for innovation may be a bit disappointed but why out criticism on such a decent unique, magical, intelligent and immersive game!?
HCL.hr Gaming Portal (Oct 11, 2009)
Even though the puzzles can be challenging, the game’s addictive nature and sense of satisfaction is rarely seen at this level on the DS. Topped off with stellar presentation values, Diabolical Box is a great follow up to last year’s original hit.
IGN (Aug 24, 2009)
Even though I say in my review that this game is essentially more of the same stuff that’s in Curious Village, I will freely admit that I had a better time playing this sequel than the original game. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is an extremely enjoyable, laid back DS experience with some pretty challenging and clever puzzles to experience. The professor is a cool cat, and his popularity needs to grow in this country. Let’s keep it going, Nintendo!
GameSpot (Aug 24, 2009)
With a number of unexpected twists and surprisingly poignant turns, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is a fun, mind-boggling adventure that continues in the steps of its predecessor. The lengthy story and huge number of puzzles will hold your attention for quite some time, and the weekly promise of new downloadable brainteasers will keep you coming back for another fix. Though fans will certainly enjoy the slight improvements made, newcomers shouldn't let the fact that this is a sequel discourage them--prior knowledge is not necessary. If you have a penchant for puzzles, then you should not miss out on this game.
The second time around is always a tough one, that is if the developer is going to try something new. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is more than less the same game but with a new hamster game/puzzle and challenging puzzles and brain teasers. The gameplay was great the first time around so I would say it is safe to figure out this puzzle.
Gameswelt (Oct 09, 2009)
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Sep 07, 2009)
Professor Layton and Pandora's Box is superbly charming (aside from its creepy moments), and Layton's constant reprimanding of Luke for not being gentlemanly enough is hilarious. A true gentleman always solves his puzzles, you know. But there's definitely a sense of slightly diminished returns in the puzzle selection. Creator Professor Akira Tago may be Mr Puzzle Pants, but you get the impression he used his very best ones in the first game, with a lot of repetition of ideas here. It's a small complaint that explains the small drop in score, but certainly doesn't prevent this from being an extremely enjoyable experience.
videogamer.com (Sep 10, 2009)
If you liked Mysterious Village and need more, or if you just want something genuinely fresh and original for your DS, Pandora's Box is the answer you're looking for.
Wired (Sep 02, 2009)
While Diabolical Box’s gameplay, animation and plot are quite a bit like its predecessor’s, slight improvements make this installment of the Professor Layton saga even more enjoyable than the last.
Giant Bomb (Aug 25, 2009)
The real success of the Professor Layton series is the way its puzzle-solving and crime-solving aspects support and blend with one another. Alone, the two halves would respectively make for a decent minigame collection and dialogue-driven adventure game. But together they create a wonderful mixture of narrative intrigue and head-scratching puzzle gameplay that propels itself forward straight through to the end of the story. Every time you hit a slow period in your investigation, you'll be excited to have some new puzzles to solve--and every time you're feeling the mental fatigue of puzzling your way through them, you'll be glad to reveal another piece of the mystery. That mix is in full effect in DIabolical Box, and while the charm and satisfaction of playing Layton may be a little less of a surprise the second time around, it's still plenty worth coming back for.
JeuxActu (Sep 27, 2009)
Games TM (Oct 01, 2009)
Professor Layton certainly has soul, but the puzzles themselves just aren't imaginative enough to save the adventure from feeling frequently out of breath.
Gaming since 198x (Mar 18, 2010)
The Video Game Critic (Jul 15, 2010)
Casual gamers will tire of the game before solving the mystery of the Diabolical Box, but those who persevere will be a lot smarter when all is said and done.
