If you've never experienced the original Sonic games, this pack is well worth you pocket money. Gaming gold!
It's not a great port and we'd have liked more content, but the quality gameplay shines through.

Despite a bad sound effect here and a dropped frame there, this is still Sonic the Hedgehog at his old fashioned finest. All of the single-player levels, playable characters, reliable physics, and bonus games are joyfully intact. Young players who have never been to Green Hill Zone nor explored Sandopolis Zone should not hesitate to dig into these adventures, while those who remember and still enjoy these games from years ago will still find fun here even if the experience isn't 100% faithful to the original Genesis rendition. It seems like a cheap shot to tear apart little inconsequential glitches in such detail, but when a classic game like Sonic the Hedgehog that is so deeply ingrained into gamer DNA is presented with even minor defects, one's gaming "Spidey sense" can't help but tingle that something is just not right. Still, it's perfectly enjoyable and probably as good as it gets from the modern incarnation of Sega.

Sonic Classic Collection, despite being bare bones in the extreme, still comes recommended. You're getting four great platform games from the Mega Drive, playable on the DS for the first time. A bit more bang for your buck would have been great, but retro gaming still doesn't get much better than this.

Do we need to say a lot more about Sonic Classic Collection? Sonic is extremely well-known, it's a top platform title, you get four of the best titles of the series on one cartridge and you can now take the blue hedgehog anywhere you want. That's all we need, I would think! Only fans who have played the games already tons of time will be left sitting on their hunger a bit.

Sonic Classic Collection isn’t the best Sonic compilation around (those would be Sonic Jam and Sonic Mega Collection). There are many other ways to play and enjoy these classic games (that too in HD), courtesy of XBLA, PSN, WiiWare and the many other Sega Mega Drive compilations. That said, Sonic Classic Collection still successfully accomplishes what it meant to do, which is to provide some of the greatest platformers of all time in one convenient portable package. So for now, there is no better way to enjoy the Mega Drive Sonic games in portable form than with Sonic Classic Collection.

D+PAD Magazine (Mar 21, 2010)
Fun, challenging and frustrating in just the right measures, the collection highlights the respect Sonic holds as an old-school entity, even though the years that followed spelt disaster and led to his dethroning as a modern icon. The games here do have their flaws – for example, there’s no charge spin in the first game, spikes pop out just when you’ve picked up a reasonable speed and the projectiles are even more irritating than before as you struggle to make them out on the smaller screen – but they remain the pinnacle of 2D gaming irrespective of this and represent the best that gaming had to offer in the early-to-mid 90’s. With Sonic 4 looking to bring our hero speeding into the modern era minus the bloated cast of unwelcome characters, there’s never been a better time to take one of gaming’s most cherished mascots for a spin.
Nintendo Life (Mar 22, 2010)
Sonic Classic Collection could have been a true must-have for DS-owning Sonic fans, but sadly it’s marred by enough small issues to put you off playing for too long. The games themselves still shine, just not as brightly as they should.
IGN (Mar 05, 2010)
Sonic Classic Collection is a good, but flawed compilation for the Nintendo DS that just screams “small budget, short development cycle!” It is what it is: four great Sonic games accurately ported to a half-assed compilation.

I love the early Sonic games as much as the next gamer but honestly, does the world really need another port to another console? It's not that the port itself is poor (no frills yes, but not poor) it's just that its all going to feel a little pointless to the majority of gamers who are likely to be interested. If you want a Sonic game on your DS and accept that its offering nothing new then fine, this is perfect for you. However, despite the undeniable quality of the games themselves, for everyone else who's probably played these exact games various times before, the motivation to put your hand in your pocket is probably a lot weaker.
GameFocus (Apr 08, 2010)
If you are a die-hard Sonic Classic fan that owns a DS and you have managed to avoid every single re-re-release of Sonic The Hedgehog known to man, yes, this DS collection might be worth checking out. Just be prepared to see your heart break into little pieces of disappointment.
N-Europe (Apr 01, 2010)
While the look, sound and feel of these classics evokes many memories; the quality of the port brings this excitement down. There are much better ports and compilations on other consoles, and the original games and a second hand Mega Drive are cheap. So the only reason to purchase this collection is if you just need to own Sonic the Hedgehog on every device in creation.
JeuxActu (Mar 17, 2010)
On préfèrera donc ressortir notre bonne vieille Megadrive en attendant Sonic 4 the Hedgehog.
AceGamez (Mar 25, 2010)
While there’s some fun to be had revisiting Sega’s favourite mascot in his original adventures there are better ways to do it than on DS. For the same price, you can probably find a secondhand Genesis and enjoy the game as it was meant to be, scan lines and all. With only a handful of character art, all of which is unlocked from the start, making up the promised extra features, the Classic Collection reeks of a project with a rushed development cycle that was slapped together at the last minute to cash in on the attention Sega have received thanks to the upcoming Sonic 4. This really is nothing more than lazy emulation of a much loved series. My childhood friend may not have betrayed me totally but I certainly don’t trust his family any more.
