That's the real strength of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition – it finally offers an easy, accessible way to play multiplayer Zelda the way it was always meant to be played. The cost barrier has been destroyed. The connectivity walls have been blasted. Four Swords was a chore before, but now there's no reason why every Nintendo fan shouldn't be able to experience this great design. So go download it already! It's free!

NintendoWorldReport (Oct 04, 2011)
Despite these minor faults, Four Swords Anniversary Collection is an amazing game. I’m shocked that Nintendo put any effort—much less this amount of effort—into a free downloadable title. But good for them. Everybody with a 3DS or DSi/XL needs to download this immediately and start playing it. And if you’ve got some friends, it’s a fantastic group title.

Nintendo Life (Oct 02, 2011)
Not only has Nintendo provided a free Zelda title to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the series, but it’s a game that has hours of replay value and a multiplayer component that is a joy to play. The occasional touch of lag or out of sync music don’t distract too much from the experience. The single player is also an accomplishment of thoughtful design, with just a few points where the balance of play doesn’t quite suit the mechanics. Overall, however, this is a terrific new version of the Four Swords adventure, lovingly crafted and full of content: if you haven’t already done so, download it now.

Would have been a nice little bonus on its own but the added extras make Four Swords Anniversary Edition a must play for any Zelda fan who owns a 3DS or a DSi.

Despite those setbacks, Four Swords Anniversary Edition is a spectacular re-release packed to the brim with more content than most paid downloadable titles; that all of this is available for free is simply mind-blowing. The multiplayer is as deliciously evil as it ever was, but I just wish more tweaks were made to tailor the single-player mode for solo adventurers. If you are able to gather a group, however, you will have a blast.

Vandal Online (Oct 02, 2011)

N-Europe (Oct 29, 2011)
To conclude, whilst short, the game offers replayability through the randomly generated nature of its dungeons, however, this only extends to multiplayer as repeated play throughs in single player quickly become bland. With two or more players is where Four Swords truly comes into its own – before you know it Link will be showing his dark side, heartlessly sacrificing allies for a few extra rupees at every opportunity. Have you ever pined for a dungeon crawler, loot based, multiplayer Zelda? No, can’t say we have either but that’s what Four Swords delivers and when it’s in full flow, it becomes the perfect blend of co-op and versus gameplay. Being free of charge, this anniversary edition of Four Swords is a no-brainer for all DSi and 3DS owners. Just remember to get together with some friends to experience it at its finest. If you only plan to play it alone, you are advised to take a couple of marks off our final score.

Multiplayer.it (Oct 07, 2011)

Nintendo made a terrific decision bringing in Grezzo once more to work on The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition, since the additions introduced have made for a lot of replay value to a game that you might not have picked up again for a while after beating it. The unlockable classic and challenging levels will make every Zelda fan pleased, and the game has been designed perfectly for short bursts. Since it is currently free to all DSi and 3DS owners on the Nintendo eShop right now, there is absolutely no reason for you not to own this. Grab it now before Nintendo start charging for it from February 20th next year!

That said, Four Swords Anniversary Edition is a short but cool game every DS and 3DS fan should own. Just don't sleep on downloading it, since it'll be free until February 20, 2012.
