In Hochseefischen: Die Simulation the player takes the role of the manager and captain of a fishing business but the main aspect is the fishing itself. The first step during a fishing trip is to steer the ship to a promising fishing ground - a sonar at the bottom of the screen shows areas with many fish. Then there are two ways to proceed: the player either lets nets into the water and slowly drives through the fishing grounds or he has to collect fish or crustacean traps. To do the latter he operates a crane to bring them into the ship's hold.

The managerial aspects are pretty simple: The player sells the fish to improve the company's balance. If he has earned enough money he can buy a bigger ship or hire better fishermen. He can also choose his next "mission" which are basically about twelve locations with different weather conditions, day times and fish. Over the course of the game the prices for different species change.
