PSPGame Chronicles (Aug 29, 2006)
I'm a huge racing fan and I grew up playing Pac-Man, so this combination was as tasty as a peanut butter cup for me. I've always enjoyed the 3D Pac-World games and this is just like those, only with fast little karts and dozens of fun and quirky power-ups. It might not be the deepest racing game on the PSP but it certainly is one of the most fun.

Pac-Man World Rally is a well-made game that’s hard to find fault with, except that it doesn’t seem to have a target audience. It’s full of nods to older Pac-Man games, but the vibrant look and cartoonish graphics suggest a younger crowd. It still doesn’t seem like there was a demand for another kart racer in the vein of Mario Kart, let alone one using Pac-Man characters. The only thing that it really has to distinguish itself is that Mario Kart never came to the Playstation. The hardcore Pac-fans will want it, of course, and if you’re in the mood for a lighthearted, well-made racing game Pac-Man World Rally is worth your time.

Pac-Man World Rally is a little too much like other kart racers, but for only 30 bucks, it's still a nice little diversion for racing fans and Pac-Man nuts alike.

If you’re looking for a great kart game, stick with Mario Kart. If you really have the urge to play a kart game featuring Namco characters, then by all means, pick up Pac-Man World Rally.

PlayStation 2Worth Playing (Sep 22, 2006)
Pac-Man World Rally looks and sounds the part, with strong, though simple, visuals and a score created in part by Dweezil Zappa and Tommy Tallarico. Yet these are the only areas of the game that feel fully developed. Between the generic tracks and a cast of bit-players, Pac-Man World Rally fails to pack enough nostalgia to seal the deal. While also being a better-crafted game series, Mario Kart succeeds because of a shared history that many gamers have with the Mario franchise. To put it bluntly, Namco have not exploited their available resources well enough to make this a particularly compelling experience. It may provide decent fun in short bursts, but history will speed by Pac-Man World Rally without a single glance in the rear-view mirror.

It's hard to gauge who this game is aimed at. The gentle learning curve suggests a younger audience, but then how many kids give a hoot about Pac-Man, or would appreciate the retro in-jokes? And how many adult gamers will keep coming back to a game where you can see everything within a few hours? Putting aside that quandary, and judged purely on gameplay terms, Pac-Man Rally is a solid entry in a mostly wretched genre. It's cute, it's charming and makes you smile without ever really winning your heart. Still, if you've been fiending for a decent PS2 kart racer you can play without vomiting your bones out in horror, here's where your money should be going.

PlayStation 2Gaming Target (Jan 12, 2007)
If you’ve played Mario Kart 64 or Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, you won’t find anything new or exciting about Pac-Man World Rally. What you’ll find is an average knockoff of Nintendo’s venerable series that feels like it took palette-swapping to new heights. Mascot kart racing fanatics might want to give it a go for completeness’ sake, but most would have more fun sticking with Mario.

PSPGamesRadar (Aug 30, 2006)
Platform-wise, the PSP snags a slim victory, as it supports four players on a local connection, while the home versions will only offer split-screen multiplayer. Then again, it's also 10 bucks more expensive. Whatever platform you choose, Pac-Man isn't a stellar example of the genre, but it's not a shameless money-grab either. Perhaps there's still some life left in the elderly little yellow dude after all.

You know, there's a little thing called the multitap that allows four people to play the same PS2 game. For whatever reason, you PS2 owners only get to hook up with one other gamer, as two-player split-screen is the option you're given. You may not be fighting over who gets to play anyway, but the feature would have been nice. In the end, Pac-Man World Rally simply has nothing unique, special, or fun about it. It's a serviceable training-wheels rendition of a kart racer for that younger audience, but for anybody looking for more than a quickly beaten game, look elsewhere.

To be completely fair, World Rally is a game for young kids -- and a budget title at that. Chances are they're not going to give a sideways crap about the game's startling dearth of creativity. Especially if they don't have a GameCube and haven't burned themselves out on Mario Kart. Chances are also good that they're too young to be reading videogame reviews on the Internet. If you have a younger sibling or a rugrat of your own, sure, it may well be worth dropping 30 bucks on this thing to express your affection or shut them up or whatever you need to do. You probably just won't want it for yourself.

Pac-Man World Rally is a paint-by-numbers kart racer with almost zero in the way of unique qualities or challenges.

Pac-Man World Rally is technically sound, but it lacks the effervescent spirit of Mario Kart. After a few races I felt like I was just going through the motions.
