Make no mistake, Papers, Please is a political and sociological statement, and often it's quite a distressing one. But it also stands as proof of the power of games to extend beyond the boundaries of simple entertainment and thrills, and it tells a hell of a story in the process.

This is a game I have been looking forward to ever since I played the demo earlier this year. I thought it was cool at the time, but I was worried that the full game wouldn’t bring much more to the table. I have never been more happy to be wrong, as Papers, Please, developed by Lucas Pope, has turned out to be one of the best games I have played so far this year. The premise doesn’t sound like much, so this is going to be a hard sell. I’ll just have to ask you to trust me, please. This is a game you should play.

Papers, Please is an addictive puzzle game that also works as a strong social commentary. Although it has a few problems associated with the story, the gameplay is fast and it's unlike anything you've ever seen before. Definitely worth your time!

It’s hard to understand why this game makes players return to it. Maybe it’s that feeling that you will be better the next time you try or maybe it’s just the curiosity to see what happens next. Whatever the case, there aren't many 40MB games that do that, and Papers, Please is definitely one of them. You will often wonder why you are playing it. Reaching the end is difficult and spotting all the fakes can be hard, but the game has a way of nagging you to go back. I understand now why being an immigration officer is probably the best job in the world. Glory to Arstotzka!

Кроме Cart Life и Papers, Please!

With its oppressive 16-bit visuals and stomping Eastern Bloc soundtrack - all ominous parps, sinister trills and garbled Tannoy announcements - Papers, Please feels a lot like an interactive anxiety attack. It's hard to call such a nerve-shredding experience "fun", but it is absorbing, brilliantly written and causes you to question your every instinct and reaction - both in the game and in real life. Such bleakness will be an acquired taste, of course, but the deep note of bitterness in Papers, Please makes for a welcome change.

For the work of only one man, Papers, Please is an incredibly impressive little game, from its understated old-school art style to its ability to make you feel uncomfortable with how much you enjoy catching criminals trying to trick their way into your country. It’s likely that it won’t appeal to everyone and it’s certainly not of the usual escapist variety of fun that video games are known for, but that’s good — it successfully conveys a particular feeling and asks particular questions that couldn’t be conveyed through any other medium in quite the same way. It wields that peculiar power to bring you into its world and make you a part of it, while perhaps forcing you to ask a few questions about yourself once you come back out.

Bravo.

With a deluge of big-budget, high-profile games on the horizon, it might be easy to overlook a quiet, unusual game like Papers, Please. But don't do that, comrade. The consequences would be dire.

WindowsGamer.no (Aug 12, 2013)

WindowsThe Telegraph (Aug 28, 2013)
It’s bleak, oppressive, perfectly paced and utterly gripping. But with its downtrodden lo-fi visuals and peculiar focus on complicated paperwork, it’s not going to be a game for everyone. But it’s a game everyone should be thrilled exists in a vibrant and daring independent scene, tapping a reservoir of fascinating themes and content that mainstream games dare not touch.

E ricordate, Glory to Arstotzka!

WindowsThunderbolt Games (Aug 14, 2013)
In the midst of this, you feel like a tiny player in a much bigger game. One of the inspectors even mentions that his position “…makes me responsible for you.” And not in a friendly manner, rather in the way that he sees you as a resource, not a human being. I’ll admit to say that I haven’t experienced all 20 endings yet, but none of them so far have been particularly “good”. Even if there’s something positive to take away from it, they always feel bittersweet. The last message you get when you fail utterly – and you will – is particularly chilling. It says that the “…border will remain open under a replacement inspector”. If you chose to be an idealist, everything you fought for will have been for naught, and you will rot away in a prison cell. But the system always survives.

WindowsDarkstation (Aug 15, 2013)
Don’t let the seemingly simple gameplay and premise fool you. Papers, Please is a moving experience that simultaneously tells a great story and makes powerful social statements. The lo-fi MS-DOS aesthetic and pared-down sound effects are also impressive in their stark simplicity. Papers, Please is a lean game that knows exactly what it wants to do, and does it with more style and confidence than one could reasonably expect. The tedium of checking papers does set in eventually, but you’ll get shocked back to your senses when, in the midst of following protocol, you realize you have been treating hundreds of hopeful immigrants as mere commodity.

WindowsEdge (Aug 21, 2013)
Games have mastered action – the amplified and instant reward – but Papers, Please finds satisfaction in the tedium of bureaucracy, and twins it with genuinely human stories and an underlying, dread-filled tension. It’s rare to play a game about something, about a time, a place and a theme, and for a game to embody those ideas from meaning right down to mechanics.

WindowsIGN (Aug 12, 2013)
Papers Please is a fantastic idea, beautifully executed. On the surface, stamping passports is the dullest job in the world. Wrapped up in Cold War chic though, it’s more than that from the start, with enough personality soon emerging from the greyness to keep it interesting even after foiling the hundredth attempt to sneak something nasty across the border. It’s not necessarily "fun," especially as you watch your family wither and die in the name of efficient immigration control, but it’s certainly compelling. Very few other games have so perfectly encapsulated just how being trapped in this kind of dehumanising role can be, in the best possible way, and both inside and out of the dreaded grey booth. If only there could be an achievement for reaching the exact moment you turn someone away for no particularly good reason, only to quietly tell yourself that, as ever, you were just following orders.

WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Aug 20, 2013)

WindowsEveryeye.it (Aug 12, 2013)

WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Aug 16, 2013)
Papers, Please is a tough sell. It’s a desk job on the surface, but lurking behind the tedium is a deep experience that rewards keen eyes and efficiency. The satisfaction that comes with surviving a shift with a few extra bucks is remarkable, and is made possible by the oppressive mood that developer Lucas Pope has crafted. I also walked away with a slightly different perspective on real-world international strife, which is well worth the grind.

WindowsInsideGamer (Sep 02, 2013)
Glory to Arstotzka!

WindowsDigital Chumps (Aug 21, 2013)
Papers, Please is a game about beating the system. Or subverting the system. Or submitting to the system. Or maybe ignoring the system. In any approach, it forces the player to consider conflict as a multifaceted condition tied to its narrative and design, and it doesn't much care if you judge its sum-total as traditionally fun. Papers, Please has something to say, and it makes it very clear at almost every instance.

Perhaps there could've been more variety, in the individual scenarios and the characters to interact with, but when you consider that this is the work of one man, asking for more kind of feels greedy. If you take stock of what we've been given; a wonderfully paced, intriguing and emotionally charged puzzle game like no other, it's easy to dismiss the odd discrepancy and give it the stamp of approval.

Eigentlich sollte Papers, Please keinen Spaß machen.

The concept may sound absurd but the experience of playing Papers, Please shines a light not on the game’s hapless victims but on the player’s own sense of decency. A fascinatingly original concept that has a lot to say about human nature. Sharp writing and as bleak and depressing as it is the presentation and atmosphere is pitch perfect. The main gameplay mechanics are simplistic and inarguably boring – which is entirely on purpose, but makes playing for long periods of time difficult.

WindowsGameSpot (Aug 13, 2013)
Papers, Please will stress you out. At times it may even make you hate yourself. And while it's weird to call such an experience "enjoyable," the gameplay itself is not a miserable time. It's worthwhile for the same reasons a depressing novel or a bleak movie can be worthwhile. There are lessons to be learned from Papers, Please, if only to remind ourselves how much worse off we could be.

Papers, Papers is an engaging and thought provoking game sure to entertain puzzle game enthusiasts and even gamers not into the genre as well. It’s undoubtedly one of the most surprising titles to come from the independent gaming development community if only because of how successfully it pulls off its unorthodox formula. This is a game that should not be missed by gamers who want a serious minded puzzle game with the bravery to make players think beyond just solving puzzles. Like a passport, this game gets a big stamp of approval.

You’ll feel stress as you rifle through people’s paperwork, your rules, maps, and have to make judgement calls all the time. I’d definitely recommend playing it, but if you don’t want the stress or to deal with the bureaucracy in your leisure time, at least watch a Let’s Play video or two. It’s a fascinating experience and one of the stranger topics for a video game.

WindowsNew Game Network (Aug 20, 2013)
Papers Please feels a little bit like a game made on a dare: "Is it possible to even make a game about checking data on paperwork?" It has strongly developed themes and an intriguing premise, but not enough of a gameplay core to attract casual players. Enter at your own risk!

WindowsBioGamer Girl (Sep 01, 2013)
Papers, Please isn't a bad game, and it surely is a unique idea for a video game, but it doesn't always make playing through the game more exciting than the real life counterpart to the job. The game is comparable to other indie games such as Little Inferno that takes such a simple task that is rarely thought about in the world of video games and makes it entertaining for a short time, but there is just little longevity to be had with Papers, Please. If you're looking for a fun and interesting new game to play for a few hours, pick up a copy of Papers, Please on Steam or GOG.com, but if you're looking for a game that is well worth every penny spent, you might want to look beyond the glorious country of Arstotzka.

WindowsGameplay (Benelux) (Aug 30, 2013)
