There is just something about Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 that shines, sure it lacks FIFA’s obvious polish but once you are immersed in the gameplay it is still the best football game where it counts and that’s why it’s the champion once more.

Top marks go to Konami here - this is how yearly updates should always be handled.

All in all, PES 2009 is one of the best sports titles to release this calendar year. In fact, I would say it definitely rivals FIFA 2009 and even NHL 2009. What a surprise! Now I can't wait for the 2010 version to come out to see how this title matures on the system.

Pro Evo Soccer 2009 is an extremely fun soccer game. It has a ton of features, even if the bulk of them are unchanged from last year’s game (less the new UEFA Champions mode) but that doesn’t make them any less fun. The one caveat to buying Pro Evo 2009 goes to those who already own last year’s version. Unless you’re a diehard soccer fan who needs that UEFA license, you may just want to stick with the version you have. But if you’ve a soccer nut don’t let the initial shock of the user interface and control scheme throw you, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 on the Wii presents some of the most realistic soccer in gaming.

For all its problems off the pitch, there’s no doubting that PES 2009 is the most fun football game on the market. There’s a nagging feeling that this is merely the game that the past iterations should have been, but there’s no denying that it plays as good a game as ever – which means for the neutral, the choice of which game to pledge their allegiance to is as hard as ever. Ultimately, FIFA wins out thanks to it offering the most comprehensive package, but those who choose to spend the next season in the company of PES won’t be disappointed.

Putting aside the disappointments of PES 2009, on the pitch, the game is still the most realistic football sim on the market. I don’t believe the PES franchise is getting any worse, rather that EA’s FIFA franchise is barking at its heels and surpassing it in some areas. The time has come for Konami to take the series to the next level and that could mean “dumbing” some things down a little (eg. the shooting) to make it less anal and more accessible to the casual gamer. I really look forward to what PES 2010 has to offer.

PES 2009 on Wii doesn't do enough to justify a purchase if you've got last year's effort. Crucially, attacking is still miles better than defending, despite the control tweaks (something we hope Konami sorts out for the next game). However, if you've become disillusioned with PES on 360 or PS3, the Wii version's a great alternative. It's not better than FIFA 09 next-gen, and it'll take a bit of getting used to, but with time and effort you'll find it the most rewarding virtual game of football around.

WiiEurogamer.net (UK) (Mar 23, 2009)
Overall, viewed in a broader context than simply its Wii competition, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is still second best to the excellent FIFA 09 on PS3 and 360, but while I certainly wouldn't make it my only football game, it's still sufficiently different that it complements EA's game and transcends the many competitive disadvantages PES 2009 faces on those consoles. Given the learning curve, some will continue to side with EA and Activision's assertion that Wii games shouldn't be made this way, but the difference here is that Konami's wilfully obscure controls unlock things about the sport that a traditional control system cannot, and for that reason PES 2009 for Wii comes strongly recommended. There's still a fair bit for Konami to sort out, and if you're still happily enjoying the first PES Wii game you might wonder if you need this one at all, but if you like the sound of the things that have changed then you have your answer.

If you're looking for a fun soccer game, and all you have is a Wii, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is the way to go. With precise playmaker controls that allow you to control everyone, you really have a lot of power over what goes on. It truly is a soccer RTS game. And although the other control mode disappoints and the graphics don't fair well, it's still an entertaining experience overall, and worth checking out if you need some fresh Wii action, or are a fan of soccer.

If you’re someone looking for the definitive football game, take two points off the score and go buy FIFA. PES purists, add a point and savour the first ‘real’ next-gen incarnation of our favourite series. For me, I’m feeling indifferent. The match engine is a return to form and it feels somewhat relieving knowing I’ll have a football game to enjoy this year, but the entire thing looks thrown together and basic when compared to what a certain other developer is getting out of the same development kit.

WiiGameSpot UK (Jul 08, 2009)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 offers improvements and more variation to what was already a great control scheme and adds authenticity and longevity thanks to the inclusion of the Champions League and Master League modes. Combine this with a strong suite of existing offline and online game modes, and it makes a compelling package for any football fan. This year's instalment raises the bar for football games on the Wii, and regardless of whether or not you played last year's version, it's well worth checking out.

Put it this way: we've been avid PES fans since the series inception and this year we're FIFA converts. PES makes changes to its formula that aren't particularly welcome for the most part and, while the Become A Legend mode has potential, the general gameplay has taken a downturn.

PES has always been the little game that could. It's faced the might of EA and delivered a soccer game that has been superior for most of its lifetime. However, lately EA seem to have suddenly "got” what players want, and have dished up a mighty fine game in FIFA 09. On the other hand Konami have seemed to rest on their laurels, and for possibly the first time have dropped the ball and seen FIFA take the win.

WindowsGamers.at (Oct 20, 2008)

Overall I think PES 2009 has the makings of a great game that’s just been held back by the lack of forward momentum. EA Sport’s putting out what is arguably the best FIFA game since the series inception doesn’t help matters much either. Coming off a bad year for the series, I think things are looking up given the improvements and additions in PES 2009 but Konami really need to step it up if they want to stay competitive.

At its heart Pro Evo 2009 is a fun game for footy enthusiasts and something that the majority of people will be able to just pick up and have a laugh with, especially on the consoles. The gameplay is still the strong suit of the series and is the only thing that keeps it from slipping into the ‘average game’ rating. Expect better next year.

WiiVideo Game Generation (Aug 17, 2009)
However, of the few titles I have had the pleasure of playing, I must say that Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is right there at the top - number one with a bullet, as they say. On the Nintendo Wii, it may lack the power (and a mode or two) of the other systems, but it more than makes up for such shortcomings thanks to some truly fantastic controls. Mind you, there are other problems that simply can't be excused, namely the complete mess that makes up the offline multiplayer or the truly flabbergasting appearance of the stadium crowds, but if you can look past that there really is a quality product here. Outside of the controls, this game has a ton of replay value - thanks to a number of offline modes and an online multiplayer component that is relatively hassle free (even if it is still lacking in a few respects) – and is sure to tide over fans of the series until the next installment.

PlayStation 3IGN (Nov 26, 2008)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 makes a valiant effort at keeping pace with FIFA 09, and there are some improvements and good ideas under the strange gameplay changes that were made, it's just tough to see them if you've played FIFA. As with most beleaguered franchises, it seems like PES 2009 could use a bit of a reboot with a new engine and improved visuals and presentation values. If not, I'd be willing to bet that FIFA will be the king of the pitch for years to come.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is a good game, but it's one that has significantly failed to evolve over the last few years. The new modes add some potential interest for owners of last year’s game, but the Champions League is just flashy dressing for a competition that still doesn't feature all of the official teams, and the Become a Legend mode is neither as feature-packed nor as fun to play as FIFA 09's equivalent. If you love Pro Evolution Soccer's gameplay and simple control system then this year's game is worth checking out, but everyone has a right to demand much more from Konami's increasingly stale series.

Still, we can't help but feel that there's going to be thousands of PES fans who embrace the power of the dark side this year, on account of the fact that it simply doesn't feel like Konami is putting much effort into the so-called 'next-gen' versions of PES these days. You might even say the PS2 is the lead platform, when you compare the strides forward between Konami and EA's efforts. PES 2009 is a good game, but the times they are changin', and we're afraid that Konami is being left behind. Time for a reboot, Seabass.

So to summarise, PES 09 is a well-presented, enjoyable game of football that suffers from a few issues involving sound and physics. If you loved PES 6 you will love PES 09 and in many ways I think this is the game’s biggest strength and, at the same time, its biggest weakness. PES 6 was the best football game of its time so it fills me with joy to see the series returning to that level of quality but at the same time, that level of quality is a few years old now and maybe PES’s competitors have moved forward in that time.

PES 2009 is an improvement over last year’s game, albeit a very minor one. If the PES franchise wants to stay competitive against FIFA, they certainly have their work cutout for them.

It probably sounds a little like Electronic Arts have paid me to write this. Well, they haven't. Neither have Konami done anything to disrepute my family. In fact if anything, I'm bias the other way. I like Konami, and I have negative feelings towards large corporate entities which are trying to monopolise the gaming market (whoever they may be). But it's just simply about gameplay, and the game's overall quality. This game has graphical beauty but in many other areas it fails to excel. On the other hand, it is still a good game, but it's just a few levels below where it really needs to be to compete with the reborn version of FIFA.

It’s definitely difficult to please everyone, let alone football fans. As a lover of the PES series, the time has come to see a complete overhaul to the engine and structure of this ageing formula. With a host of new gameplay modes, and a selection of problematic features, this version of PES will only appeal to the hardcore. As it stands today, FIFA 09 provides the better, and hugely more realistic simulation of the beautiful game. Fortunately for Konami, they will once again cash in on the faith of their support, and get away with releasing a totally unfinished, and adequate product for the third year running. It’s a dreadful shame, as for now, PES’s main rival is not only well ahead, it is also ironically showing the team up with one main ingredient; evolution.

The basic act of playing the game is still enjoyable enough, but with FIFA adding loads of great new features like 10 vs 10 online multiplayer, this seems like a step sideways instead of forwards.

Xbox 360Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 15, 2008)
Should you stick with Konami, then, PES 2009 will grow on you, and you may forget you ever thought about switching teams in the first place. But personality isn't always enough, and the fact is that PES can only draw alongside FIFA in the areas where the Konami game's strong, falls short in others, and never could hope to compete on the glossier, contracts and lipstick side of sports game production that EA's ruled for years. Not quite a reversal, but PES needs to be a very different game when it hits 2010 if it wants to overhaul the Canadian upstart.

PlayStation 2IGN (Dec 10, 2008)
It’s too bad that more wasn’t put into the PS2 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. The players on the pitch are rough around the edges with little visual improvement but the flow of the game holds up quite well. Threading passes through the aggressive AI’s defense and burying one in the corner of the goal is as well done as ever, it's just not very different from the 2008 version. Become A Legend helps the package, but no online is a real letdown. Overall PES 2009 on PS2 can't compete with EA Sports’ champion for the 2009 season.

After being on top for so long, PES goes down hard this year. We desperately tried to find any positives in PES 09, but we couldn’t manage even that. The game is fun, if you play it once that is. Graphics are sad, realism level is even worse, and the fact that FIFA 09 is so good this year will not make life any easier for PES 09. Being a devoted (Arsenal) football fan and having played so many football games (As Arsenal) for years now, I can firmly confirm that this is not the football game you want to be playing this year. FIFA 09 to PES 09 is exactly what FIFA 02 was to PES 02. For all the hardcore PES fans out there, good luck finding any positives in this one.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will undoubtedly appeal to the PES faithful. If you're a FIFA guy and are wondering what the fuss is all about, you'll still be left wondering. The solid, friendly A.I. and easy passing mechanic is more satisfying than that of last year's version or that found in EA's footie title. However, the lack of overall polish is inexcusable. Thankfully, this is a discounted title here in North America. For $49.99 you will be treated to a fun game of soccer, but you will also be subject to some glaring missteps. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up on PC. That seems to be where this series shines and is supported by literally a world full of players.

In one word: disappointing. This is exactly what we don’t expect from a PES game and considering the improvements made by its nearest rival it comes as even more of a surprise. Hopefully this will provide the kick up the backside needed for a complete overhaul but that will do nothing to placate fans that were expecting so much more this year.

Palabra.

While Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 doesn't stray from the beaten path solidified by the series, earning its reputation of a great soccer simulation, those who own recent installments are not given enough reason to purchase this year's offering. The inclusion of a few new features looks impressive when listed on the back cover, though they are anything but when actually put to use. It's unfortunate for a series of games that I have always enjoyed playing.

PES 2009 is still a fun and enjoyable game; there are quite a few modes – the Master League is still here, as well as online play. It’s just now you can really see the difference between FIFA and PES – and FIFA is starting to pull away.

Similarly, PES 2009 is a drunken misstep for the series, but because I’m a sucker for the underdog, I’m hopeful that Konami will get it right the next time around. In the meantime, we’re left with a game that looks, smells, and feels a lot like regret and a hangover.

But you just can’t get away from how poor this looks. It lacks soul and personality. The ball is heavier meaning it’s probably more realistic but it looks awful. I feel bad for PS3 owners because any excuses about the PS3 being hard to make games for should be going out the window by now but that’s not happening. PES fans may get a lot from this as they’ll selectively ignore some of the glaring issues, but if you’re only going to buy one football game this year, make sure it’s FIFA.
