Far Cry New Dawn shares a lot of great similarities with Far Cry 5, but it’s the minor tweaks that allow it to stand as its own title. With so much to do, so many places to explore, and a post-apocalyptic world that is grounded in realism, there is no shortage of entertainment to be had in Hope County. While Mickey and Lou may not seem as threatening as previous instalments’ villains, they and the Highwaymen with their vibrant neon graffiti and motocross-influenced gear are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Welcome back to Hope County – and good luck.

Destructoid (Feb 17, 2019)
The best narrative beats in New Dawn still fall short of reaching Far Cry 5's highest points, but this standalone sequel is a more well-rounded experience overall. Ubisoft knows when to be serious and when to let its silly flag fly. This time, the top priority was setting the stage for player-driven hijinks, not forcing story moments with a heavy hand. After all the doom and gloom sowed by Joseph Seed and his cohorts, Far Cry New Dawn resonates as a sorely-needed palate cleanser before the next full romp.
GamesRadar (Feb 14, 2019)
Far Cry New Dawn might be a spinoff game, but it’s sure to have a lasting impact on what we think of when Far Cry comes to mind.
Meristation (Feb 18, 2019)
Far Cry New Dawn sets out to continue the story where Far Cry 5 left off in a fresh new take on what the apocalypse means. The detail in every aesthetic is absolutely gorgeous, and the sense of isolation when out on the road feels eerie but real. The system for upgrading Prosperity means you always have something important to do and the game does a good job of putting you in the shoes of someone trained to survive, however the lack of creative new weapons, apocalyptic customization, and what feels like less content than its predecessor really hold New Dawn’s potential back. If Far Cry 5 didn’t exist, New Dawn could easily have been a new narrative on its own, but because we have something close to compare it to the only saving grace for its fewer features is it’s reduced launch price. If you had a good time in Far Cry 5 and enjoy lite survival mechanics, you’ll have a blast tearing through Hope County, but as a stand-alone Far Cry entry it doesn’t quite hit its mark.

IGN (Feb 14, 2019)
As someone who loves the Far Cry formula and will take my fix wherever I can get it, revisiting Far Cry 5’s slightly reworked open-world map in New Dawn proves there’s still quite a bit of joy to be found in clearing outposts and generating as much chaos as possible, in single-player or co-op. I could’ve done without the silly story and disappointing final boss, but Expeditions are a thrilling new mode, and the story missions are exciting more often than not. New Dawn is an enjoyable diversion while we wait for Far Cry’s next big thing.
Video Chums (Feb 14, 2019)
Far Cry New Dawn is a refined but unexciting adventure. For those who have exhausted all the previous Far Cry games and are still craving more, New Dawn will scratch that itch but those hoping that it might advance the core gameplay are going to be disappointed.
Game Informer Magazine (Feb 14, 2019)
The core formula of this series holds up, but New Dawn struggles to make worthwhile contributions to it. Beyond the expedition missions, little about New Dawn actually feels new, and the only interesting narrative threads are the tie-ins to Far Cry 5. When all the best parts of a new game are the old parts, it’s hard to be excited about what comes next.
Cheat Code Central (Feb 15, 2019)
From a big picture perspective, Far Cry: New Dawn is fine. It hits a lot of checkboxes that have come to define what Far Cry is and manages to wring some newness and intrigue out of its reused map. While the storytelling is even more unfocused than the previous game (though much less disappointing, due to a noticeable walkback on pretense), new gameplay additions like breezy RPG progression and the Expedition missions make it a fun ride all the way through. Far Cry: New Dawn still has a lot of familiar snags, but the overall experience makes for a solid weekend or two of Hollywood-style gaming.
God is a Geek (Feb 14, 2019)
Whilst Far Cry New Dawn isn't a completely new experience, it does have a few features that give it new life, and despite the bugs and weak story, it was nice revisiting Hope County.

New Dawn’s post-apocalyptic landscape makes for a more focused version of the Far Cry package, which is great if you just want to kill time capturing outposts and hunting animals.

GameSpot (Mar 06, 2019)
There's a lot of potential in the ideas seeded in New Dawn, but there isn't enough room for many of them to breathe and feel fully realized. Not the post-apocalyptic theme, not the RPG mechanics, not the weapons, vehicles, plot, or characters. Advancing through the adventure is an enjoyable experience, especially once you get your superhuman powers, but this is largely because Far Cry 5's combat and progression models remain compelling enough to propel you forward. For its part, New Dawn is a palatable but unremarkable spin-off that feels like it could have achieved so much more.
Slant (Feb 21, 2019)
By the time New Dawn reaches its rushed third act, it’s broken down entirely. After failing to convey what it might be like to live through nuclear war, the game simply begins to emulate what films like Mad Max have already depicted about the end of days. The last few levels forgo the open-world features and varied weaponry that make the Far Cry games worth playing for and instead make their way down a post-apocalyptic checklist: a Thunderdome-like fight club, a demolition derby, and even a prison break. New Dawn is too self-aware by half—especially when it comes to side quests, all of which are played for laughs—and spends too much time recycling concepts from other media as opposed to contributing anything new to either the open-world explorer genre or the more niche genre of post-apocalyptic video games.
