Cage’s games, meanwhile, don’t indulge that. What you as the player do, and how you do it, does have some impact on the flow of the story, but it’s not immediately obvious what that flow might be. This is again Cage’s cinematic style, and he would rather have a narrative that subtly and organically shifts rather than leave players with the impression that they’re flipping switches, but at the same time it tends to undersell his games; you’re never quite sure if what you’re doing is having any impact at all. That might be a negative to you. It’s not really to me. Heavy Rain is very much the kind of game I like to play; it’s smart, interesting, different and highly focused. Cage might be a one-of-a-kind game director and thinker, and I do wish more developers paid attention to how he approaches his storytelling.
Game Over Online (Mar 03, 2016)
It remains one of the most unique and well-crafted games of the past decade. It features an incredible story and some of the most realistic, sympathetic characters ever seen in a video game. If you’ve enjoyed past blends of gaming and movies, like Indigo Prophecy or Shenmue, you’ll love Heavy Rain – it takes that sub-genre to a whole new level of immersion with the in-game world and your interaction with it using an innovative control scheme that takes very little time to get used to and makes great use of the PS4‘s button layout and Sixaxis motion controls. Despite some rough edges, Heavy Rain remains an unforgettable experience.
Gaming Age (Mar 10, 2016)
The PS4 is now fully loaded for all the interactive drama adventure genre games you could want. I would probably put Until Dawn at the top of the list of games in the genre, but Heavy Rain still holds a red balloon in my heart. While the voice acting isn’t as good as Beyond: Two Souls, the story and chilling score soundtrack are top notch (and as I mentioned earlier the game is still visually stunning). If you haven’t played Heavy Rain before I would consider it a must buy if you like the interactive drama adventure genre in the least (plus, if you already purchased Beyond: Two Souls on the PS4 you can get a discount on the purchase of Heavy Rain).
PlayStation Universe (Jul 02, 2019)
Heavy Rain looks fantastic on PS4 and still has the power and sophistication to leave a lasting impression. Despite not fixing the glitches and awkward, robotic crowd scenes for this remaster, Quantic Dream’s interactive drama is an absorbing experience not to be missed.
Multiplayer.it (Mar 01, 2016)
CGMagazine / Comics and Gaming Magazine (Mar 01, 2016)
If you’ve missed Heavy Rain the first time around, or are looking to play David Cage’s best work for a second or third time, this souped-up PlayStation 4 version of the game is the best way to go.
Atomix (Feb 29, 2016)
COGConnected / Canadian Online Gamers Network (Mar 02, 2016)
If you have never played Heavy Rain before, I definitely think it is worth discovering on the PS4. It shows its PS3 origins for sure, and will not impress any players these days with its visuals. But it still retains the core game mechanic that makes the experience just as fun as it was back in 2010. This is a great game that still has the power to engross today’s gaming audience. However, for all those who have played it already, I hate to rain on your parade, but Heavy Rain might not be worth another visit. Nothing new has been added since you last played it, and now you know how the mystery ends.
3D Juegos (Mar 01, 2016)
Everyeye.it (Mar 01, 2016)
We Got This Covered (2016)
Six years may have passed since Heavy Rain was first released, but it still holds up very well and is a nice addition to the PS4's library.
IGN (May 10, 2018)
A great port, but six years on Heavy Rain has dated in some fundamental areas.
GameSpot (Mar 03, 2016)
Re-releasing Heavy Rain in the current landscape does much to sharply contrast everything good and bad about it. Its commendable presentation is amplified, as too are its grander faults in storytelling and voice acting. And yet even as there are games that succeed where Heavy Rain fails, it can still be said there’s almost nothing else like it.
Slant (Mar 05, 2016)
Despite its missteps in characterization and plot, Heavy Rain is always concerned with telling a story rather than selling us the gimmick of player agency. This integrity is best illustrated in the fact that Cage doesn’t litter the game with condescending commentary about your choices having consequences (the creators of Game of Thrones, Until Dawn, and Life Is Strange should take note). At one point, you can spare a person’s life as Ethan, who’ll state, “I’m not a killer.” Rarely does a game involving such a decision come with a moral sentiment as strongly communicated.
The Jimquisition (Mar 02, 2016)
As a game, Heavy Rain is acceptable and not without its high points. It’s damn lucky it isn’t the movie that it wishes so badly to be.
Push Square (Jul 02, 2019)
The forecast was never exactly great for Heavy Rain on the PS4. This remains a ground-breaking game, and it's still possible to appreciate the areas where it innovated, but time has not been kind to the title's damp performances and dismal writing. If you're eager to go back to the release that gave life to the current spate of narrative-driven games, then this new-gen port does an admirable job of sprucing up the visuals. But while we don't want to hang this important outing out to dry, you should certainly beware of the inclement weather within.
